NCO Projects- Is it worth auditioning on violin?

My DS (8 years old) has just done his grade 4 ABRSM practical on violin and gained a distinction. Is it worth him auditioning for NCO projects? I see they have a minimum grade level of 4. However, my daughter (13 years old) is in her final year with the national NCO on a non string instrument and tells me that to get in on violin is crazily competitive. She never did the weekends, just went in at nationals in Under 12s, so it’s something I have no experience of. He’s keen to audition as she’s had such an amazing time. Is it worth having a go or should he wait for future years? Thank you.

Ask on the extracurricular music thread, there are plenty who have done nco and would be able to advise.

Residential violins as a whole, not just the first, are much higher level than projects so looking at them would not give you a good indicator.

I think there were g5 in London projects, I can't remember g4 but that doesn't mean it's impossible. Projects in London are a bit more competitive than regionals so depends on the location too.

If your DS is keen to audition, why not giving it a try? It's always useful to practise audition skills, whatever the result.
