Choosing between RCM, RAM and Guildhall junior academies for tuba

My son has been fortunate enough to be offered places at the RCM, RAM and Guildhall junior academies from September. He is going into Yr 12 and is a Tuba player. It’s not a world with which I am hugely familiar and would love some insights on the different programs. Thank you in advance.

Might be worth posting on the main spring/summer music thread in extracurricular activities, I think there are a few parents of JD pupils there. Not sure if any tubas specifically, they're quite a rare breed!

Do you know what teacher he would have at the different schools? I think that's the main thing. And have you asked about what ensembles/orchestras he'd get to play in?

And congratulations 🎉 all great options to have.

Thank you - do you have a link to that thread? So difficult to know - we’ve scoured the websites and he asked lots of questions but they all seem so similar!

With tuba he will be welcome anywhere I would have thought! Our JD struggles to get tubas and often has to get a senior student to come in. So you would have loads of ensemble opportunities I imagine. Maybe look at the tutor they like best and also logistics - which is easier to get to etc. Congratulations on securing a choice of places.

Thank you - it’s been a really tough choice but after lots of chats with teachers and tutors, he has decided to accept a scholarship place at RCM - he’s so excited to start!!
