has anyone done this instead of the theory so they can progress past grade 5 on their instrument?

or is it not really done!

@OhCrumbsWhereNow

sounds exactly like dd!

Is she ADHD or dyslexic by any chance?

BeardySchnauzer · 20/05/2026 18:36

🤣 how did you guess! ADHD

She really loves the piano and her teacher says she’s the best sight reader he’s taught. But she doesn’t want to pursue it beyond recreational. The theory and having done a year of music gcse put her off

That's completely understandable. That sounds good though if the Trinity repertoire is inspiring her!

DD is both. Some kids with ADHD can be exceptionally good at pattern recognition and absorbing things like music theory whilst being completely unable to explain or articulate them. And at deciding some things are 'not interesting or useful to my life'.

Huge upsides and huge downsides simultaneously.

I have learned over the years to embrace the first and mitigate the second. And for DD that has meant just accepting that some things are never going to happen because she just doesn't think there is any practical requirement for them. And the professional world appears to accept and actively embrace this, while the academic/college/exam board world does not. I just need gin and strength for one more year!
