Hi,

my daughter loves singing and anything music. Currently she is doing Piano, choir at school and violin. As she has interest in singing I am thinking of enrolling her into vocal lessons for singing. I have no idea what lesson or where to start. I’m in Duffield Derbyshire. Can anyone help me of how they start classes with their young child for singing?

What kind of singing does she like to do?

Mine started with Musical Theatre classes at the weekends with a mix of dance, singing and acting. Then started 1:1 singing lessons at 8.

She does 30 minutes of vocal exercises and 30 minutes of songs. Mix of MT and pop as she has no interest in choral or classical music, but didn't start pop till she was 11/12.

You may find a lot of teachers are reluctant to teach before age of 14 for singing. We found that a lot, even her long-term teacher was unsure till he met her, so don't be put off if you get that reaction. The important thing is to find a teacher who teaches safe technique and appropriate repertoire for her age.

There are exams if she likes that kind of thing and lots of different boards depending on genre.

Can't advise on local area as we're London, but there are online options as well. DD prefers in person.

Mine started with PQA. Is there a similar stage school near you? One daughter has taken her skills from that into singing and piano at a specialist school. The other also plays piano, but has found her performing skills most useful in gymnastics, it's a good all round extracurricular that feeds into a lot of areas.

Have a look at Derbyshire Music hub, we're really lucky in Derbyshire. Your local music centre may have a choir and is a good place to start.
