Hi all. My DS2 is starting the sax next term. He's been desperate to do it and the teacher at school gave him a trial lesson last term
and said he seems ready, so off we go!
Just wondering - if I need to buy a sax what is the best one? I did email his teacher to ask, but can't get hold of the him now it's the hols. Just thinking I should do some preliminary investigations.
He's quite musical - does singing lessons and got Distinction in his Grade 1 - about to take Grade 2.
They did the ukulele during class music lessons last term and he was apparently fairly rubbish! Struggled to hold it properly and get the chords! I'm hoping that's just an indication that he's more of a brass / woodwind guy !

I'd hire a sax. You can have it for 6 - 12 months. If he takes to it, you can usually buy it outright with credit given for the hire payments you made. If it doesn't work out, you have only lost your hire fees.

We started by renting one from the teacher, then bought a fairly good one once we were certain about progress. You could ask the teacher if that would be a possibility?

Oh great thanks. I'll look into hiring one.

Sometimes the school lends one. Maybe check there. Later on if they are enjoying it and you want a better one, you can usually get one new with the vat off through the school.
