BBC 500 Competition

Is anybody else waiting to hear whether their child's story is on the shortlist of 50 for the BBC 500 Words competition? Those on the long list are supposed to hear today/tomorrow, but it looks from Twitter that at least one child found out last week... My son is quite excited about it (his school have been hyping it up), just wondered if anyone else had heard? :)

Is any else appalled at the content of the 8-11 gold winner of the 500 words competition. Where does a child get such a bizarre and unsettling idea from. Surely not the mind of an 8-11 girl.

What was her story about?

Just found it on the BBC Teach website. Yes, quite a disturbing story with no real ending either!

My autistic 9 year old has written some dark stories. I don't think the content is beyond the realm but the actual writing seems odd, and disjointed with lots of KS2 grammar examples shoe horned in. The ending is not great either.

Can't you read them yourself? Rather than have them read to you by some chap.

Anyone find it odd that one of the eventual gold winners was mentioned in the tweet upthread?

No, because that's when the winners were notified!

BarleyShuga · 08/03/2024 19:50

Did their school break an embargo by tweeting ahead of the published notification date?

I thought Olive's story was incredible. May be disturbing to some but is you have a read though the finalists, you realise how switched on they are

Felt a bit sorry for the winner who wore their school uniform when all the other medalists were in home or best clothes. Wonder how many winners were state educated or private schools.

I think I heard there were 44k entries. And the time before was 130k - of this is correct why do you think that might be. Less schools entering whole classes? Our school didn't do it.

I loved the Scottish gangster one too
