NYMT/BYMT 2024!

Seeing as NYMT have announced their shows, it feels like a good time to start a thread for anyone with DC planning on auditioning for 2024 for either NYMT or BYMT - as performers or musicians, or as assistant creatives. Please come and say hi and tell us a bit about your DC. There are lots of experienced parents of DC who have been part of both organisations, and these threads are always genuinely supportive and helpful.
I'll invite some previous thread participants below - please come and say hi!

@allhailthebrain congratulations to your DC! Very exciting news, and well deserved.

@wonderfullife123 meant to wish your DC broken legs yesterday but it was a bit of a hectic day. I hope they both enjoyed their auditions?

Thanks @Biscuitsneeded that's so thoughtful. They enjoyed it! One seemed a bit underwhelmed with how they had done in one of the sections due to nerves. But they definitely had a good day.

yodaforpresident · 15/01/2024 09:07

Congratulations to your DC @allhailthebrain!

wonderfullife123 · 15/01/2024 09:25

Fantastic news @allhailthebrain congrats to your DC

Biscuitsneeded · 15/01/2024 09:53

@wonderfullife123 Glad it was broadly a good day. My DS came out of an NYMT audition a few years years ago very subdued. Cried once we got in the car because he had fluffed the singing. He thought it was game over, but it wasn't. I think the creative team are very good at spotting talent behind the nerves. Fingers crossed for both your DDs.

Congrats to allhailthebrain's dc. Fantastic achievment.

Dd and I looked at Arts Ed 6th form when she was in Year 11 but in the end she decided to withdraw her application as it just wouldn't have been viable for her even if she had got in.

wonderfullife123 · 15/01/2024 11:18

Thanks @Biscuitsneeded that's reassuring. Glad your DS had a good outcome on that one. Thankfully they don't seem to have too long to wait to hear.

Mcmumager · 15/01/2024 12:13

So I’m now in the gang where my ds has applied to NYMT himself so my checking email days are over!

Comefromaway · 15/01/2024 12:20

That is even worse somehow as you never know if your child has checked their email or checked their junk or missed something !

Mcmumager · 15/01/2024 12:24

@Comefromaway im such a control freak too lol. He’s done all his drama school applications too so im constantly saying have you checked your emails!!

allhailthebrain · 15/01/2024 21:10

Thanks everyone!

For various reasons @Comefromaway the decision is likely to go another way, let's put it that way! However, going for the audition was incredibly good experience (good and bad - things we'd be prepared for as a result of it) and gave both all of us what we needed to make the decision...

It's been interesting to see how different my kid has felt on audition day vs. open day with different schools. Opinions have changed in both directions and the rankings have altered significantly!

Zanthe · 15/01/2024 21:36

@allhailthebrain Thank you, that’s really useful information. My DD has applied to Brit but we haven’t heard anything back yet. She’s auditioning for BYMT at the end of Jan and NYMT mid Feb, both in London. She’s super nervous!

Zanthe · 15/01/2024 21:40

@Biscuitsneeded Sorry, meant to tag you as well in my other reply. Haven’t really posted on mumsnet before and have got the hang of replying and tagging!!!
BYMT and NYMT both sound amazing. I’m really hoping my DD (she’s 13) enjoys the experience of auditioning, even if nothing comes of it.

Comefromaway · 15/01/2024 21:50

Yes we had similar experiences.

for example dd had been highly recommended Tring Park. She attended a summer school there and hated it!

Biscuitsneeded · 19/01/2024 17:26

I gather the emails about last weekend's auditions have been sent. Hope to hear some good news on here...

It's a no for us this year - DD is not keen on the idea of the skills workshop offered and was surprisingly unbothered. She has rather a lot of music exams in the next few months, along with scholarship exams for senior school in May - so I think committing to a week at Easter, when she's already away for a week on holiday, was always going to be a huge stretch. Probably for the best in retrospect and she still has opera and BYMT auditions coming up. I will continue to lurk though!

Zanthe · 19/01/2024 20:59

@yodaforpresident Was this for NYMT? What is the skills workshop, if you don’t mind me asking? My DD has an audition in February.

wonderfullife123 · 19/01/2024 21:53

Unfortunately no for us as well, similarly to you @yodaforpresident DDs not keen on the skills workshop and looking ahead to BYMT auditions and some other singing opportunities. Break a,leg to all the DC and will also lurk and look forward to hearing how the recalls and shows go!

Biscuitsneeded · 19/01/2024 22:35

Oh I'm sorry to hear about the no's. I'm glad all the DC affected have other auditions coming up.@yodaforpresident @wonderfullife123 please do stick around and tell us about BYMT. The thread seems to have got dominated by NYMT talk but it's really meant to be here for both. Hope your DDs go and dazzle them!

OP posts:
Mcmumager · 19/01/2024 22:42

i love how these kids are so resilient and ready for the next audition- this will prepare them well for the future.

My ds has had amazing experiences through BYMT and NYMT and made so many friends from both. Both mean they get to work amazing creatives. This year has seen Babies original BYMT hit the west end and the creators of this years new NYMT show catastrophe bay have a west end show launching with Sam Tutty in the lead.

Biscuitsneeded · 19/01/2024 22:51

We went to see Babies in the West End because an ex-NYMT friend was in it - we absolutely loved it.

allhailthebrain · 19/01/2024 23:46

I'm sorry to hear about the nos - please do stick around, this is an equal opportunities waiting room! BYMT - and all sorts of other things - thoroughly welcome!

Mumster40 · 21/01/2024 09:52

I’m sorry to hear about the nos. It’s very hard for them but I agree how impressive their resilience is! I still haven’t received a response to my email from over a week ago asking about the casting workshop on the 11th Feb…. although I have noticed that it has now been added to the website. It seems very odd (and unfair) to hold a recall before all the first round auditions have been completed…I’ve not been overly impressed with the new regime so far…... My DD has now signed up to audition for BYMT too! Thank you to everyone on here for talking about it. Hopefully, it will be a positive experience.

yodaforpresident · 21/01/2024 10:13

DD is not upset about it - she loves doing the shows but has no intention of pursuing performing arts as a career. She doesn’t dance, go to a stage school or even a Saturday drama school so she knows what her limitations are. She is primarily a singer and musician with a side of LAMDA and screen acting.
