NYMT/BYMT 2024!

Seeing as NYMT have announced their shows, it feels like a good time to start a thread for anyone with DC planning on auditioning for 2024 for either NYMT or BYMT - as performers or musicians, or as assistant creatives. Please come and say hi and tell us a bit about your DC. There are lots of experienced parents of DC who have been part of both organisations, and these threads are always genuinely supportive and helpful.
I'll invite some previous thread participants below - please come and say hi!

@Broshi dont panic! Easier said than done I know as I did! But they have been lovely and said don’t worry! I would email them and flag it with them so they know! Apparently they have to put in the email address’s manually! I ve pm’d you!

Ahhh thank you, I have emailed Chris Cumings as that seemed to be the only email address I had…. He seems flat out bless him! 🙈

I have an entirely irrelevant question to BYMT/ NYMT but one for those whose DC do LAMDA exams.

If one of your pieces was known for being regional based, and you were very capable of doing that accent, would you perform it in the regional accent or stick with your standard accent?

We do a lot of accent work in our house so DS does do LAMDA with regional accents but as PPs said, consistency is key. Our trick is to network a bit and find someone who speaks that dialect in their real life (rather than an actor or a coach) and ask them for a voice memo of the words you need, and once you’ve studied it up, record yourself to ask them if you could pass for a local! Don’t ask anyone who is too over the top sweet - you need someone who can be honest! Then you can rework the bits that stuck out and hopefully be all consistent.

Equally if they say it’s a hot mess and you’d stick out like a tourist, then opt out and do it in your natural accent.

Three people in our house all with three different accents and I still owe a northern friend a drink for helping crack the vowels for Billy Elliot on a LAMDA exam!

allhailthebrain · 08/03/2024 03:52

Yes the one in the pack 😊

the email address for accounts is accounts@ and then the normal address - but equally they’ll reply from the normal address too.
Do not panic - they will sort it and they won’t remove anyone because of a payment issue, they would contact you and ask.

NCMO2G · 13/03/2024 16:27

are there any other parents on here who have kids doing one of the step by step courses in the summer - and if so have you had any info on what they do on the course? - we have to choose between the NYMT course and something else due to a date clash - but haven’t had much info directly from NYMT as communication is a little patchy I though I might ask here if anyone can shed any light! - we have only two more days to decide the invoice for payment is due for the course. Thanks!

allhailthebrain · 13/03/2024 18:08

That's a hard one @NCMO2G because it's kind of new this year, from what they've said. In the past all their courses were open to anyone where as these are only for those who made it to recalls etc... Also the previous ones were residential and I know this time some are and some aren't!

doesanybodyhaveamap · 13/03/2024 20:38

Very ready for musician news now... 😩

NCMO2G · 13/03/2024 21:02

Thanks @allhailthebrain 😊

allhailthebrain · 13/03/2024 22:29

Ah @doesanybodyhaveamap it closed Friday right? How long does it normally take?

doesanybodyhaveamap · 14/03/2024 10:39

Closed Friday. They said middle of March. We are definitely in the middle of March now 😂

Keeping everything crossed for some good news for you soon

disorganisedmummy · 14/03/2024 15:07

Also waiting for musician news although my ds gets the emails not me so am totally reliant on him telling me which is rather worrying!

Haha, love it. 14th, yeah we aren't far off it 😂

Fingers crossed for all the musicians! Hope you get news soon!

Do any of them have a preference as to which show they'd love to play in...?

disorganisedmummy · 15/03/2024 07:18

Allhailthebrain Ds really wants Into the Woods but he's put that he's available for all shows . He'd rather do one of them than none of them if you get me.

doesanybodyhaveamap · 15/03/2024 07:36

Same here- desperate for ITW!! (I expect all the musicians will be keen for a bit of Sondheim...)

Mumster40 · 15/03/2024 11:00

Bit of a BYMT update. But not great news….we were told yesterday that the second round of casting has been completed. DC hasn’t been cast in a show during this round but we’ve been told that they want to keep them in consideration for THIRD round casting at the beginning of April….! Third round casting?! Didn’t even know this was a thing? It’s like auditioning for a west end show! Oh well. Back to the waiting room and the biscuits…! Did anyone else hear some (hopefully) good news yesterday? Wishing all the NYMT musicians the very best of luck x

Comefromaway · 15/03/2024 11:27

Sorry to hear that.

Only yesterday ds mentioned that he hadn't heard anything from BYMT as they spoke to him at a workshop about potentially being involved in a project. His summer is booking up so if anything comes of it, great, if not, he has some exciting things in the pipeline including being in the band for a support act for a well known artist.

wonderfullife123 · 15/03/2024 14:54

Hi! Fingers crossed for the musicians waiting! @Mumster40 my DD2 got the same email yesterday - I wonder how long the 2nd round offers have been given to accept? Last year, my older DD finally received an offer in May - they didn't alert last time when each round was completed and she'd almost given up hope. I vowed that I would just crack on and book holiday this year but will wait for this round I think. Guess we might hear just after Easter?

Mumster40 · 15/03/2024 16:07

@wonderfullife123 we can share the biscuits then! Yes, I suppose it will be after Easter at the earliest. From your experience last year do they ever give a ‘no’ after the first round of ‘nos’ ? Or do they keep all of the shortlisted kids on a very long unending waiting list? It’s encouraging to hear that your daughter did get offered a spot last year though. Fingers crossed for them again this time!

wonderfullife123 · 15/03/2024 17:08

@Mumster40 - yes pass the biscuits!! It feels like constant waiting. So last year, they didn't advise when they had completed any round of casting but looks like this year they will. I know last year, and I assume this year too they will advise when the final cut off of any offers happens, which can go as late as June I believe. My DD who was on the reserve list last year got placed in the first round this year, and my DD currently on the reserve list was placed first round last year. Nothing is ever straightforward is it... ? I assume based on the email yesterday we'll get info at each stage of casting until the final cut off. Keeping fingers crossed for your DC for good news next time.

Biscuitsneeded · 16/03/2024 22:33

@Mumster40 I really can't believe that update. They can't have been watching or listening when your DC performed....

yodaforpresident · 17/03/2024 17:37

Thank you @CatatonicLadybug she has decided to go neutral as the accent is not required so why risk it?

We had until March 8th at midday to accept the first round offer from BYMT, so two weeks from the email.

doesanybodyhaveamap · 18/03/2024 11:04

So apparently musician results will come out Saturday morning.

yodaforpresident · 18/03/2024 12:10

My DD was also accepted from the reserve list for BYMT last year @Mumster40 so it does happen.

Mumster40 · 18/03/2024 14:21

Thanks everyone for the kind and encouraging comments. Rejection is sadly very reflective of the industry and something that all our DC will need to get used to in order to survive. A valuable part of the journey and a good indicator of whether they have what it takes to stick it out as a career......I keep hoping my DC will discover a passion for Chemistry or Economics....can't bear the thought of the drama school audition trauma that will be looming in the next couple of years! That must be a LOT worse than a NYMT/BYMT disappoint. Hats off to all of you who have gone through this or are going through it now. Did you encourage your DC to apply for drama school/MT as well as University?

doesanybodyhaveamap · 18/03/2024 15:34

@Mumster40 we have this coming up- in our case likely some drama schools and also some music conservatories (because they still can't decide 🙈) but we won't be doing any traditional uni's in parallel. We just know it's not right for them. So if they don't get a place they're happy with, it's a gap year and more training.
