NYMT/BYMT 2024!

Seeing as NYMT have announced their shows, it feels like a good time to start a thread for anyone with DC planning on auditioning for 2024 for either NYMT or BYMT - as performers or musicians, or as assistant creatives. Please come and say hi and tell us a bit about your DC. There are lots of experienced parents of DC who have been part of both organisations, and these threads are always genuinely supportive and helpful.
I'll invite some previous thread participants below - please come and say hi!

@Shesings2023 as @Biscuitsneeded said not everyone gets recalls and not very one gets a place after recalls. BYMT is an NPO and has access to Arts Council funding, so can offer a few more shows but not all get through there either.

Shesings2023 · 04/02/2024 10:50

@Biscuitsneeded @yodaforpresident thanks guys. Your insights are great. My dd got a recall so just trying to manage expectations too. To be fair I think the DC have more resilience than we do in this game 😃

Biscuitsneeded · 04/02/2024 11:00

@Shesings2023 too right! They are very resilient. I think because they are in the room and can just see the talent at recalls, they get a realistic gauge. They can't see who's in other sessions so they can't predict who will get which role, but mine nearly always talks about someone who was completely amazing, and they get a good sense of the very high standard. Congratulations to your DD for her recall.

@LibbyRuncie Hooray for fabulous NYMT mums. Got to say for all the years it's been running, this thread has always been kind and supportive, with no spats or flounces! Hope it stays that way. NYMT want nice company members, and they are watching for that at auditions and recalls, so parents who model kind, polite and humble behaviour may set their children up for better chances anyway. My DS went to a few West end auditions as a kid (always got a recall, never got the job!) and some of those parents were just jaw-dropping. Mercifully never encountered that at NYMT.

DD just got back from her audition today, said she really enjoyed it and saw a few people from last summers concert and the Xmas concert, which was lovely. Now the waiting begins, need the good biscuits to keep me occupied 😂. Well done to all that have already got through to the callbacks.

Biscuitsneeded · 05/02/2024 15:35

@Mumofteens20 Glad to hear your DD enjoyed it. My DS was very surpised to get news back already today! Has your DD heard anything? My DS has a recall for Platform which is the thing for over 18s.

@Biscuitsneeded such good news for him! X

Yes just got recalled for Our House. Very excited and didn't have time to break out the biscuits 😂 well done to your DS 👍🏻

Biscuitsneeded · 05/02/2024 15:43

@Mumofteens20 Great news! Congratulations to your DD! All without the need for any biscuits either (maybe I should change my username?)!

Wow fast news! Congratulations to @Mumofteens20 and @Biscuitsneeded .

Mumofteens20 · 05/02/2024 15:47

Oh I think I'll keep the biscuits for finding out news from the next round. Definitely biscuit and maybe even vodka will be needed then 😂

Operasingerkath · 05/02/2024 17:08

Gosh that was quick! Congratulations!

wonderfullife123 · 05/02/2024 17:21

Congratulations!

Mumster40 · 05/02/2024 18:34

Congratulations everybody! Lovely to read all the positive news. Just wondered if anyone else has a DC attending a recall this Sunday 11th for the new musical workshops? Apparently, there are 3 this year. And if so, have you received any material yet? The email I received with the recall offer said that there would be material sent out in advance. I’ve emailed to ask but haven’t had a response.

allhailthebrain · 05/02/2024 21:10

Congratulations @Mumofteens20 and @Biscuitsneeded (or biscuitsnotneeded as she shall henceforth be known!).

Sorry @Mumster40 I don't know the answer to that one - would imagine it should be soon! They were probably getting results sorted before they move on to the prep for the weekend...

Shesings2023 · 05/02/2024 22:34

@Mumster40 We have no material either yet and we are also this Sunday for workshop. I don't think they have announced them on website either. To be fair they are very good communicators so hopefully tomorrow we will hear more.

NickyNack1 · 06/02/2024 01:41

Hiya 😄
Haven’t tried for NYMT before, so not sure how it all works. We’re in a similar position waiting for the workshop prep info for Sun 18th recalls on Castaway Bay.
I’m assuming that they don’t send the info until a few days before the recall….is that correct?

Did anyone get to see it performed at the Old Vic?

Good luck to everyone 💗
Xx

Biscuitsneeded · 06/02/2024 06:06

@NickyNack1 welcome to the thread and congratulations to your DC. They should get their materials for show recalls about a week before - possibly some time this coming weekend.
@Mumster40@Shesings2023 I'm not sure about materials for the musical workshop recalls happening this weekend, because it's the first time they have held separate recalls for the summer workshops. I'm sure something will be arriving very shortly, and it sounds as if it's the same for everyone. They won't expect the DC to have learnt any words. I hope you hear something quickly now.

I don’t think there is material being sent out prior to the workshop on Sunday 11th 👍

Kittykat57 · 06/02/2024 11:28

Hi all, am a complete newbie to NYMT. My DS has a recall for into the woods which they were delighted with. My question is will he only be considered for that production? I understand there isn’t an ensemble so not a huge cast? He really enjoyed the audition at the weekend and said everyone was so friendly. Thanks

Biscuitsneeded · 06/02/2024 14:32

@Kittykat57 welcome, and many congrats to your DS for his recall. If it's for Into the Woods then yes, that's the show he is being considered for, but some people who aren't placed in the show they recalled for might be offered a place on a new musical workshop. I suspect NYMT will have an ensemble for Into the Woods too - a typical show has a cast of about 30 maximum, although in recent years there have been a couple of bigger ones. It will depend on the size of the venue, which has yet to be officially announced, although a lot of the young people seem to know where the shows are going to be performed!

The recall material for the show recalls has just dropped into my inbox- worth checking for those in the same position!

Keepcominghome · 07/02/2024 08:00

Another newbie here - thanks so much to those who know more for sharing your knowledge! Our DS has a recall for C Bay, which is great - just received the audition material. I was just wondering if he might have been sent the wrong set as the songs are for treble clef voices; he thinks he should just sing an octave down but I wondered whether they usually send out songs for lower voices? We haven’t done anything like this before; sorry if this is a really dumb question!

yodaforpresident · 07/02/2024 09:37

Good luck for all NYMT recalls this weekend. Still in the waiting room for BYMT here (end of Feb for news on this, I think) but DD was successful in joining her opera youth company which she is thrilled with - I hadn't realised that they will also be in the chorus for one of the professional operas being staged, which she is buzzing about.

Biscuitsneeded · 07/02/2024 10:16

@Keepcominghome Hello and welcome, and congrats to your son on his recall. I can't help with your specific question as my DS is now too old for any emails to come to me, so I can't look at the materials. However, in the past, the recall materials were accessed via a Dropbox link that should have contained everything needed for all voices, for all the shows. There's usually a letter marked 'start here' to read first and often it says what to prepare according to your sex and voice type. You may well be able to see material that your DS doesn't need, but somewhere there will be music suitable for broken voices too. I'm not a musician so I wouldn't know what clef it should be written in, but often there is a track too that they can listen to. If that doesn't help, I'm sure someone on here who also has a CB recall and can see the materials may be able to give more guidance!
