Hockey Goalkeepers...the smell...

Any parents of hockey GKs got any secrets for dealing with the smell?
I've just come home from the shops and my DS has his kit airing in the porch and honestly the stink as you come into the house is horrendous.(Weather is not suitable for outdoor airing here at present.)
We wash what we can and squirt Febreeze on pads, kickers etc but the nasty niff persists. Has anyone found something that works better?!

You've just reminded me that it was tipping down when DD was training last week (and her kit is at school - grr).

I suspect it is more of a teen boy thing. I wash DD(15)'s every few weeks (just sloshing the kickers etc in the bath and the pants/armour in the washing machine)
