Friendly football/ sport option

I've been looking at local football clubs for DS (age 7) and all look very competitive. He is particularly sporty but I want to have an active activity for him. Any suggestions on what to look for? It doesn't even need to be football, but something active and encouraging.

Triathlon! They can choose whether to compete or not, events for that age are very short, just to get them used to it. Loads of variety in training- good mix of ages in our club too so they get to know 7-18 year olds. We do one swim, one cycle and one run a week, used to have more pre covid. It's pretty cheap too, you really don't need fancy bikes but if you get the bug, you can often get bargains from other members. Lovely family atmosphere at our club.

My daughter does quite a few sports and climbing seems like the most friendly if there's a climbing centre nearby.

Hockey. My son found it a really refreshing change after the toxicity of junior football.

The girls did karate and judo. They had fun, the club didn't push competition. I think it all depends what the club is like and whether or not they're full of 'soccer mum' mentality.

Try posting on your local FB page asking, one my friends son is playing baseball, I thought that was only an American thing. If its a sport then you do risk it becoming competitive.

Rugby. There's a position for everyone, whether you are tall / short. fast / slow, agile / solid. The game is about teamwork and supporting the player with the ball. You can't win a game on your own, it takes the whole squad.
