Grade 5 music theory

Hi everyone,

DD is registered to take the grade 5 music theory exam in November.
She's doing quite well revising.
We are a little worried about the format of the exam. She uses past papers to practice but the exam now due to Covid takes place online. We are expecting that a few things were adjusted to fit the new format.
I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts re this, relevant information or insight on how we can help her be ready for the online version of the test.
She's rather young (9) so we would like her to be as familiar as possible with the type of questions and not be thrown by things she hasn't seen before.
Thanks Daffodil

Didn’t want to leave your post unanswered. My dd took the pilot exam in August. She’s a little older (had just turned 11 the week they did it) and obviously had only had the ordinary papers to revise with.

Abrsm did provide a few practice questions, which was more about familiarising with the format- hopefully those are still there? Getting her familiar with using a mouse was also an issue (especially given the massive technical problems that are hopefully now sorted) and my husband had to step in to help her scroll down a page at one point. Other than that, though, her prep for the cancelled June exam was enough to see her through with a high merit. I’m sure your dd will also be fine- it does seem to test the same knowledge in a different way.

@minisnowballs thank you, this is really helpful.
We are aware of the examples on the ABRSM website and she'll cover that. Luckily, due to distant learning over lockdown she's well used to using the laptop and mouse :-)

We are doing it too, it was a pain finding a webcam. Have printed off the practice pages from the abrsm site to try out but other than doing the old past papers haven't done much else. Just hoping for the best really, sorry not much help.

MissScotland · 29/10/2020 11:41

Thanks @horseymum! I have downloaded the ABRSM theory app yesterday and she uses it to practice too.
How old is your DC?

She's 13. It's quite hard for us marking the practice papers even though we are musical, it tests the grey cells alright. The ones online have an answer sheet tho. The muso app is good too, was recommended on here and is handy.

musicaldilemma · 04/11/2020 19:23

There are new practice papers available on amazon (4 papers “music theory sample papers for new format theory exams”) as well as the new practical book (“discovering music theory”) We worked through these at half term. I made sure to get the answer booklets too. The new practical books are so much more user friendly especially for primary school candidates.

Thanks @musicaldilemma!
She's covered all of the material already. I'll have a look at the 4 papers.
Good luck!

I'd recommend you try out the software etc to get into the practice exam as I did it last night and there was an issue which I needed the chat support and it took ages. Hopefully sorted now.

Good idea, we’ll try today, thanks!

Found you! My dd did this last night and although the admin stressed me out she seemed ok with the actual test. Any idea how long it will take to get the result? I’m paranoid we did the photo/Id part wrong 🤭

MissScotland · 11/11/2020 19:18

Hi @Newgirls, good to hear it went well (that's what my daughter said too).
I think they said between 4-6 weeks. That's a really long wait....

OP posts:
MissScotland · 11/11/2020 19:18

@Newgirls what did you use as a photo ID?

OP posts:
Newgirls · 11/11/2020 20:39

Thanks x 4-6 weeks - if we’ve messed up the Id I wonder if they will come back to us before then? I think we did it in the wrong slots so photo and then passport (or other way round agh)

Overcovid · 11/11/2020 20:45

New girls
My daughter did the August one and we made exactly that mistake but showed it to the proctor at the end and all was fine!

Newgirls · 11/11/2020 21:00

Oh smart we should have done that but I only thought about it later! I wonder if they will email us rather than just fail. She was clearly a kid doing it and I wasn’t in the room.

Overcovid · 11/11/2020 22:25

I’m sure it will be fine!

Newgirls · 12/11/2020 09:45

Thanks over x

Did everyone get their results? We are so proud, she got a distinction! Smile

Congratulations! Merit here, but equally proud as she only started studying it a month before the exam. Smile

confusedpombear · 10/12/2020 12:59

Congratulations to your DD! Grade 5 theory age 9 is a huge achievement especially with distinction Smile

MissScotland · 10/12/2020 13:43

Thanks all and best of luck in the future x

That is very, very clever. Think one of mine failed at 15 ...
