My dd is on the First Strings Experience at the Royal Academy of Music. Looking to connect with other parents as she’s coming to the end of FSE1 and we need to make instrument choice. Looking for any tips as I have no idea! Thanks

Ask her what she likes? Ask RAM what they recommend? See which teachers she likes ... think practically, do you want to be taking a double bass on the tube? Good luck.

Violin: easy to carry, hard to hold at the beginning, popular, fiercely competitive

Cello: three times expensive than violin (1 set of good strings cost £300 and you need replace every one to three months, instrument itself is expensive as well), harder to carry, less competitive than violin

Viola: too early to star for your child' age but easy to switch from violin in the future, less competitive, highly demanded, less popular

Double bass: too early to start, very hard to carry, need a big van, hard to find good teacher, highly demanded, much less competitive
