French equivalent of UK music grades

Hi all,

I was wondering if anybody knows how the UK music grade system works in relation to the French conservatoire system? My 14-year old son is going to stay with some friends in France this summer, and they have suggested that he goes on a music summer camp with their son. The camp is asking what 'cycle' his level compares to (I know this relates to the conservatoire system, but none of us know how the two systems compare). He plays classical guitar and did grade 8 last year.

The main purpose of this trip is for him to learn better French, but he likes the sound of the music camp, so it could be a nice extra.

Any ideas would be appreciated!

I think it would be cycle 2.

How l9ng has he studied guitar?

Thanks, clearsommespace. He started when he was 8, so about 6 years.

I just looked at the obligatory piece to go into cycle 3. At Montpellier Conservatoire last year it was Vals by Manuel Ponce, by heart.

Thanks, Clearsomme, that is helpful. He could definitely play the Ponce by heart, but would only do so under duress as he was not very keen on that piece when he learned it.

I guess I could tell them that he is somewhere in the higher end of cycle 2 and early cycle 3 and then they can decide what to do with him. I can't really see it would make much difference - they have individual lessons as part of the camp so they will easily be able to suss out what level kids are at and adjust accordingly, no?

Hi OP
This sounds really interesting. My 14 year old DD plays cornet and needs to improve her French. Would you mind PMing me with the name of the camp please?

Sekhmetthecat · 30/06/2019 22:09

Hi thethe,

Sure, I will send you the link. TBH I know very little about it as it is all being organised by my friend, but I think it could be run by the conservatoire that he is at. She is asking then whether my DS can come along, as his French is painfully rubbish... so I am not sure whether it is a camp that is only for kids from that conservatoire and she is trying to persuade them to let DS join in as a bring-along as her two kids DS go every year, if that makes sense. But it could be worth a try as it does look fun!

Just sent it, thethe, hope you received it. Had another look, and it looks like it is open to all, so could be something for your daughter.
