Any figure skating parents around?

Not a parent myself but am a skater who would love to share the ups and downs with like minded folk.

I've done one competition this year, with 2, possibly 3 more planned.

Off for a group edge and footwork lesson tonight with 3 other adults.

Is anyone competing at Dundee this weekend? I'm loving watching it all in the YouTube live stream

BBoodles · 10/08/2019 22:31

My daughter competed and was happy with her skate so I am happy too. The livestream is amazing, friends and family back home were able to watch and I have to add the people at the rink were so friendly and welcoming! We will be back ;)

meala · 11/08/2019 00:30

The live stream is great - I wonder if I saw your daughter skate Smile, me and my DD watched a lot of it yesterday as she had friends skating in the levels 1,2 and 3 comps. The live scores are great.

meala · 11/08/2019 00:30

Glad that your daughter skated well and was happy with how she did. Smile

LollipopViolet · 12/08/2019 17:59

Well, things are ticking along nicely for me. Coach has decided to start on the salchow - weird jump and it's not great right now but given time I'm hoping we become friends. Spin is improving, spirals are apparently very good and we're starting to gear up for my next competition in September :)

Sounds great Lollipop!

Good luck with your salchow and well done with the spirals, when I was taking lessons trying a spiral terrified me. I thought my leg was so high and my DD laughed saying it was hardly off the ground Blush

Forms out today for Aberdeen open

BBoodles · 17/08/2019 06:26

Filled them in! It's so stressful entering competitions isn't it?.I feel like the countdown clock is on, managed to do in work before I left :)

meala · 17/08/2019 08:43

It is getting so hard to get in to the competitions. Hopefully i got it in quick enough but have to wait and see.

LollipopViolet · 20/09/2019 10:39

Had another competition this past Sunday. 2 clean skates, new season's best on free skate, slight drop in free dance score but I use dance to help with the free, so I'm okay with that. Spoke to coach about moving up a competition level and he wants a toe loop and salchow out of me, as well as a decent one foot spin, so we're aiming to move up at next April's event in Glasgow.

That sounds great Lollipop. Well done! Hope the toe loop and salchow go well 😀
My DD competed for the first time at a new level two weeks ago. Had a lovely clean skate so a good start to her new programme and first outing for her new costume.

BBoodles · 21/09/2019 12:34

Well done lollipop! Spirals look so difficult! You must be pleased

BBoodles · 21/09/2019 12:36

That's lovely meala it's great when they are happy with their skate. My daughter is competing in about 3 weeks so new dress for her too, I best get saving

meala · 21/09/2019 20:24

Is she doing Aberdeen BBoodles?

BBoodles · 21/09/2019 21:02

Yes but doing British qualifier first so need a dress for that , have an amazing dressmaker so can't wait to see it

meala · 21/09/2019 22:14

I love seeing new dresses at the rink. They are always so beautiful. Good luck to your dd at the qualifier!!

LollipopViolet · 23/09/2019 20:14

One of the girls was skating in a gorgeous dress last night. My 2 friends and I stood at the side as she ran her program (small rink, so everyone just moves aside for routines) and admired it, definite dress envy from me!

I love seeing the skaters on their new outfits! It's the smiles on their faces :) who made it lollipop?. I love looking at dressmakers pages :)

LollipopViolet · 24/09/2019 17:51

I don't know who made it, unfortunately, it wasn't a skater I know very well so didn't ask. I'm itching to sort my next one but need to agree new music with my coach, and then get in touch with my clever dressmaker friend and get her to design and make it for me :)

Have you seen the changing dresses that some of the Russian juniors have this season? They are gorgeous.

LollipopViolet · 27/09/2019 11:23

I love and covet those dresses - it's like magic Grin How do they work??

Also, has anyone seen that Libby Clegg, the Paralynpic gold medalist has been confirmed for Dancing on Ice? As a visually impaired skater this makes my heart happy :) It'll be interesting to see how they handle the training etc, and how the public responds (although that bit worries me - there's a lot of ignorance out there).

How's everyone doing? Any news to share?
I'm currently trying to get my salchow and toe loop to cooperate, and my 1 foot spin is stuck at 2 rotations.

I'm also, thanks to the Inclusive Skating championships not being at their usual time, possibly entering Blackpool 2020 at adult pre bronze level. I must be mad...

So coach is pushing me hard at the moment but I'm loving it. I fly to Finland in just over 2 weeks to compete in an inclusive competition there, then there's our Christmas show, then Solihull inclusive event in January.

I'll have a break eventually, honest!

No news to share, anyone going to watch the british at sheffield next week? just saw its on bbc iplayer live so will watch at home :)

Bindle2014 · 03/12/2019 19:33

Hello everyone,
Ex figure skating mum here but I miss it so would love to join your chat Smile My daughter stopped skating a couple of years ago. It turned into a huge part of our lives. Its so odd though, after years and years training and competing and also making lots of friends, she has zero interest in ever setting foot on the ice again!
We did watch The British together on BBC though to watch her friends and old competitive peers and both enjoyed that Smile Great to have it streamed!!
Re: colour changing dresses, I have seen those for exhibition programmes but never for free skating competitions! Interesting concept. There are rules about not having theatrical costumes so I'd have thought it a bit risky!

BBoodles · 03/12/2019 20:05

I kinda long for the day my daughter stops skating! It's such a time consuming exhausting "hobby" (I can't event call it a hobby because it basically feels like a job!) She loves it though, what level did your daughter get to before she stopped?.
