Can you help me understand Rainbows badges?

It's frying my brain.

Dd has come home today with a Network badge, Family Tree badge and Animal Lover badge - all of which confuse me to different extents..... Also her promise badge - which I do understand.

For the Family Tree badge, the photocopied pages we were given suggested she needed to do 3 things (create a family tree, do a helping hand where she writes about important people and something about Recognising Roles.) She did the Family Tree and took it in tonight but hasn't done thenother two tasks but was given the badge.

Similarly on Animal Lover there are three tasks of which she's only done one (again took it in tonight) and got the badge.

Is she supposed to do the other tasks? Does she get multiple family tree or animal lover badges? And what is the network badge? Can anyone explain it?

Lastly, where on her shirt do I sew them?

Hmmmm .... she shouldn't have been given the actual badges if she hasn't done all 3 sections for each one. Maybe the leader is being gemerous to encourage the girls to do the new badges? It's not correct though. My Brownies are earning theirs properly.

There are no official placements for badges but some areas have local conventions. Just have a look at older Rainbows in her unit.

Could they have done some extra stuff in the sessions?

Yes, as others have said, Network is a Skills Builder which is a badge they work on during the unit meetings. She should have done 5 different activities for this. There are 6 stages of each Skills Builder (there are 12) which they work on all the way through to Rangers (age 14-18) so she's probably done stage 1.

Strictly speaking, she shouldn't be given a badge for the interest badges (the ones they do at home) until she's done all 3 activities. Maybe you could encourage her to do all 3 before taking it in in the future? Great that she's enthusiastic though!

There are no strict rules about where to sew badges but some units do have a guideline they follow.
