May Music Thread

Have a new thread for May... you all managed to fill the April one!

This is a place to chat about music lessons, exams, practice, aural, theory, performances and anything else you like. We have many regular and occasional posters (some of whom are learning themselves) with children ranging from complete beginners to very advanced. We do try our best to make sure everyone feels welcome!

I am mum to Goo (12) flute and piano, and Rara (9) cello and clarinet. They play in loads of school groups, South West Music School and NCO, although practice isn't going too well at the moment. Later in the week, all three of us are taking part in a big community concert, which will be lovely.

druidsong it sounds very exciting! Good luck with the performances. I'm sure the GCSEs won't suffer anyway although I'm sure it pushes stress levels up!
DS1 is managing his instrument lessons but we decided revision plus streaming cold meant no ensembles this week.

Kutik73 · 05/05/2018 10:21

Good luck to all the performers this weekend. For some reason I have no energy today and am suffering from terrible ache in my right shoulder and arm. Of course it happens to be one of the longest musical days between two venues (3 x 30-40 mins taxi ride across London involved) with lots stuff carrying around. Typical! Yet unlike Sheku's mum, I have to deal with only one so it should be nothing (but not for me!).

TabbyTigger · 05/05/2018 11:24

Good luck to everyone!! Sounds like a lot of stress, I don’t envy any of you.

Thank you druid and kutik. Scales are her favourite thing to practise (she loves improvising) and she takes grades on piano and cello so should be fine with the aural. Clarinet was always just her “extra” instrument (she self taught guitar and ukulele as well so has plenty of variety Grin), but she’s decided she’d like something to show her her progress - she only took grade 3 and she’s well beyond that standard now. I’ll see if I can source some sight reading books - I’m sure our neighbour lent her one for grade 3.

Trumpetboysmum · 05/05/2018 11:25

Oh no Kutik Flowers and I don't think any of us should compare ourselves to sheku's mum - I certainly couldn't do what she does . Hope all the music goes well today

folkmamma · 05/05/2018 12:12

So far so good! Moll survived both solo classes (very well!) and Noo piano. Three 'very good's' so far. Noo violin and our Trio to go 😍

TaggieOHara · 05/05/2018 12:52

Flowers for Kutik and Folk.

Not much going on here. DS2 has a choir event this afternoon, so an extra two hours of hanging around for me. But it is beautiful weather, so I don’t mind at all. A good excuse for not being at home doing the house work Smile

CruCru · 05/05/2018 13:59

Good luck to all those performing today.

se22mother · 05/05/2018 14:27

Dd survived the festival too, despite the lack of preparation she managed a gold medal and incredibly positive comments on the other piece.

CruCru · 05/05/2018 14:51

Well, that sounds amazing se22mother.

All done! Huge relief 😊 both girls did really well today - particularly great comments from adjudicator for Noo's Mozart (made me cry!). Our Trio was so much fun too. 'Very Good's' across the board - Noo a bit disappointed not to come away with an 'outstanding' but the mini-masterclass was hugely useful and it's all great prep for JD audition in a few weeks.

TaggieOHara · 05/05/2018 20:32

Yay - well done Noo, Moll and Folk!! Star

And well done SE!

And, I've just realised I forgot to hang clothes to dry this morning... A full of wet clothes has stayed in the washing machine all day on this sunny day. Suddenly I feel Very tired...

TaggieOHara · 05/05/2018 21:05

Kutik - have some Wine and a nice relaxing evening. In this weather, they will air and dry in about 20 minutes tomorrow. You deserve a break!

Kutik73 · 05/05/2018 21:06

But thanks Taggie and druid. Smile

I'll re-wash them now. Hopefully I won't go to bed without hanging them!

Kutik73 · 05/05/2018 21:08

Oh cross posted Taggie. Thanks for reminding me. Yes it's probably time for Wine! X

se22mother · 05/05/2018 21:15

Well done everyone. Starfor the children and Winefor their mothers. We had to dash a long way across London to get from the festival to an ensemble she does on a Saturday afternoon.
