April Music Thread

We've managed to fill up the March thread, so I give you April's, around 10 hours early. Don't use it all up at once!

The music threads are for learners of ALL ages and stages, including beginners and adult learners.

My kids Goo (11) and Rara (8) break up from school today, thank goodness. Rara is off sick at the moment, in any case, but they both need a break. They did their music exams this week. Goo got a distinction for her Grade 7 Flute, and we are awaiting the results of Rara's Grade 1 Clarinet, plus a couple of my pupils. They will probably come on my birthday - the ABRSM ones often do.

Next term, we have a big community concert at the local high school - all the feeder schools take part. Goo could do Grade 7 Recorder and/ or Grade 4 Piano, but I don't think she wants to. Rara is doing Grade 3 Cello. My Year 6 Recorders have been asked to play in the local Festival gala concert, and I'm sure there will be primary school leavers' performances too.

Thanks, ha ha green tell this little someone that she will be playing this fast and more when she's 15!
I just realized that you need to watch it full screen to really see the fun of it which is the hammers, so sorry, I shot it with a camera that shoots with a square format!

se22mother · 20/04/2017 22:36

Drummers that's brilliant. He is really good

Kutik73 · 21/04/2017 12:14

Drummers, it's so entertaining! I love watching dancing hammers too and so does DS who often gets distracted by those lovely hammers dancing up and down during his piano lessons (as they are on show on the teacher's ground piano).

OverAndAbove · 21/04/2017 15:27

Hi
Sorry to butt into your thread (I do lurk here sometimes, hope that is ok!) but I thought you might be able to answer a quick question:

How do you deal with a 3 page piece in an exam i.e. without a page turner? My dd gets quite distracted if she has to turn it herself and whilst she usually plays from memory, she does like the music there just in case. The abrsm website is a bit ambivalent about the use of photocopies...

Please could anyone advise? Thanks in advance

drummersmum · 21/04/2017 15:57

I think that if you have the original with you as proof of purchase and have just photocopied it to have the three pages displayed in front of you it should be ok? Waffle here is our most experienced member and can maybe confirm Wink

stringchild · 21/04/2017 16:02

Hi we are told to photocopy the third page and attach it to the original so the theee pages sit flat - same for accompanists.

OverAndAbove · 21/04/2017 16:08

Ah yes, that makes sense - it would just be one page (or maybe two for two different pieces, I can't remember) but definitely she'll have the book there.

I know for festivals we've had to supply a photocopy for the adjudicator, and they make a point of saying they rip it up afterwards.

Thanks for that!

Trumpetboysmum · 21/04/2017 16:33

I'm going to photocopy ds's page turns for the accompanist for Monday's audition ( but ds will also take the book and I won't copy the first 2 pages if that makes sense)

Kutik73 · 21/04/2017 17:13

Oh dear, I wasn't concerned about the accompanist turning pages in the middle of playing at all for all the auditions DS went. I just handed them the book without any photocopies attached so they had to turn the pages as they went. I saw them doing so in the warm-up room, and still didn't think anything about it, assuming they were fine. They played fine but how thoughtless I was!!

raspberryrippleicecream · 21/04/2017 17:13

DS takes photocopies of the third page (occasionally it's the first page) into ABRSM exams. I usually paperclip it to a piece of card so it's less likely to fall off

Kutik73 · 21/04/2017 19:06

I just love this clip...

LooseAtTheSeams · 21/04/2017 19:21

se22mother · 21/04/2017 19:55

StarStar well done loose

LooseAtTheSeams · 21/04/2017 20:08

Doubleup I feel for you - that happened with my grade 3 result and it was very stressful. The results eventually came in but it was a lot longer than they said. I think our music centre got the current batch this afternoon so fingers crossed you hear very soon.
I am drinking wine and looking forward to learning something new when lessons start on Monday!

Wafflenose · 21/04/2017 20:23

Well done, Loose! You are so very brave. We all knew you would pass!

Yes to the photocopying - stick the third page to the edge of the second page - it's perfectly OK.

Great news Loose well doneSmile

Kutik73 · 21/04/2017 21:26

DS's JD challenge is still continuing. He did the second round of audition for JD No. 2 last week and today we received a happy offer.

We still have two more auditions to do - one is for JD No.3 and another if for a youth orchestra No. 2. But I am a bit tired of auditions and as JD No. 2 is DS's most favourite, we are leaning towards cancelling JD No. 3 and just go for JD No.2...

DS is having a trial day at JD No. 1 very soon. I'm tempted to cancel that one too. But it's such a commitment that part of me feel DS should try and see alternatives before we make the final decision.
