The new programme should take about 60% of your meeting time (40% for all sorts of random other activities).

Generally a Skills Builder every term, and then a mixture of UMAs from across the different themes to give a varied programme.

Gonzales27 · 13/01/2019 21:20

Thanks @EduCated

That sounds more positive!

EduCated · 13/01/2019 22:41

It takes a bit of getting your head around, but I do quite like it now Smile We’ve also found that a lot of the UMAs Sound a bit odd or just look a bit nothing’s when you glance through, but a few times now have gone back and realised we’d not really appreciated some of them fully!

In general, there’s no race to get all the awards, and no expectation that every child will get the gold award. We will plan the programme so that they get the opportunity to to do everything they need to do, but equally we’re not going to heavy handedly push them to!

Groovee · 16/01/2019 20:31

Has anyone had a meeting regarding the new programme with their parents? Just feeling like some of the ones who were with us before the new programme haven't read my email about how interest badges work and they are whinging about no badges last term apart from the ones who completed an interest badge. Wondering if a meeting may help?

OP posts:
Becles · 20/01/2019 11:36

Sent my parents the summer documents but no meeting. I think it helped that we did the programme and rarely did interest badges in the unit (2-3 a year max) or on holiday.

It's a massive change for those who just did challenge badges or interest badges rather than a slight challenge it is for the rest of us.

Lots of things need to get better soon (go) and other stuff but it's good to have consistency across areas when the average volunteer stays 2 years.

BringOnTheScience · 27/01/2019 21:00

Ugh! Pack holiday prep and Those Parents are niggling about who's going to be in which room with their Flossie.
Well, you can't all share with Polly Popular and someone has to share with Sally Special-Needs.
And Tessie Talkative isn't sharing with Charlie Chatty because we'd quite like to get some sleep.
And yes, Connie Cottonwool-Wrapped will do Orderly & Health duties along with the rest.
And we will be encouraging Felicity Fusspot to at least try some eggy bread.

BringOnTheScience · 29/01/2019 22:29

... it got worse at Parents' Meeting!

Can I drop her off early? (more than an hour early!!!)

Can she have a single room? She's used to her own room.

Give me the strength to get through this!!!

Groovee · 30/01/2019 06:21

Oh jeez. No is a complete sentence...

@BringOnTheScience I feel for you. Lots of gracious nodding and taking it into consideration through clenched teeth and promise of wine I bet! Good luck

Just tried hard not to rant on this AIBU post

@gonzales I've just found this thread thanks to your original thread back in November ;-)

Welcome to Rainbows. I've got 15 years under my belt and will be honest, I'm not loving the new programme. And I like to think of myself as a forward thinking and progressive Guider, not one who always harks back to the Good Old Days . . .

Our plan is to deliver what we "need" to in the most positive way we can ie the requisite SBs and UMAs. Leaving plenty of room for the activities we know the girls enjoy. Our girls (and parents) are refreshingly unhung-up on "achievement"; so far there's been very little interest in the Interest badges and I can't see us getting many Golds in the years to come.

Our aim is for the girls to Look, Learn, Laugh and Love with us, and leave with some simple life skills and having grown in confidence.

Good Luck with your Unit

BringOnTheScience · 30/01/2019 18:19

Becles wine will certainly be involved on Sunday!

InflagranteDelicto · 07/02/2019 08:02

Found the thread again.

BringontheScience I don't envy you that parent. How long before the holiday?

BringOnTheScience · 07/02/2019 15:46

Thank you 😀
Last weekend. It all went very well and the groups worked perfectly. All asleep by 10.30 on both nights!

Only remaining glitch is that one Flossie has lost her badges already & mum seems unimpressed that I don't have spares.

There was wine Wine

MillicentMargaretAmanda · 07/02/2019 22:02

Well hopefully Flossie will learn to be a lot more careful with her badges... sigh.
I've had mine drop them on the way out of the hall after I've said three times 'Don't drop your badges on the way out'. I'm afraid I have little sympathy if they do lose them!

InflagranteDelicto · 08/02/2019 23:25

I've had them drop them on the way out of the hall! Parliament week badge, so not particularly small either.

I couldn't bring myself to comment as yet but feel free

Groovee · 11/02/2019 08:29

Don't cha just love the sweeping generalisations of people on an anonymous Internet forum. 😭😆

OP posts:
MillicentMargaretAmanda · 11/02/2019 09:36

I dived in. Apparently I'm being unnecessarily huffy. Probably am but I just get SO FED UP of the generalisations.

Groovee · 11/02/2019 09:51

You came across very well @MillicentMargaretAmanda but you know people like to get their knickers in a twist 🤪

OP posts:
Becles · 11/02/2019 10:35

I'm running a raffle for the next ranty post. How many people will have been kicked out of brownies or guides? I'm going with 12 within 50 posts.

bonus badge from my stash for the person who correctly guesses the most outlandish or random reason for the banishment.

MillicentMargaretAmanda · 11/02/2019 11:07

@becles someone on the first page claims they were thrown out for finding a poo on a scavenger hunt... Hmm

BringOnTheScience · 11/02/2019 13:42

Perhaps we need a ODFOD badge that we could award on these threads?
1 - state how Scouts is better
2 - claim to have been thrown out
3 - give an excuse for why you can't help

MillicentMargaretAmanda · 11/02/2019 13:44

@bringonthescience Yes!!!

Becles · 12/02/2019 17:49

A badge you say?🤔

BringOnTheScience · 12/02/2019 23:21

We could go the whole hog and create a MN Skill Builder. Nice dark MN blue hexagons.
Suggestions for 5 clauses in each Level please Smile
