Can anyone explain judo grading to me?

ds1 has done a couple of gradings in his judo lessons. Does anyone know how they work, he's got the first belt (red) and they change the tabs on it. I tried google but got more confused.

How old is he?

He's 6.

Does he have an actual red belt now? We still operate a different system where they get up to (I think) 12 red tabs before they get a red belt.

So many (3?) red tabs convert to (?1) yellow tabs after age 8 (our system).

I see another system is going elsewhere, hence your confusion, alas!

He got the red belt after the first grading, and the tabs change each time. I think he has two green ones at the min! No wonder Google was so confusing. I wonder if there are different schemes?

I think your club sets their own rules. There is national grading (on a white belt) or club grading. Our club starts with a red belt, and then 1,2 and three white tabs, then 1,2,3 orange tabs, then green. My six year old has 2 orange tabs on a red belt and my 8 year old has 2 green

I have also been totally confused, but I think it's because when you google it it explains the national grading system and not your club. Ask your club also some explanation in the Judo 'passport'
