Songs for a 9 year old boy?

He says he wants to sing pop songs not classical things, fair enough. But he couldn't give me any particular songs and I'm SO not young and trendy and knowledgeable about this - any ideas?

Does he want to perform, lots of drama groups do musical performances and kids who can sing are always in demand.

Yes he likes drama, this is a request specific to singing lessons though.

DD gets lessons with someone local, they choose appropriate music for her.

At age 9 he needs to be careful. Most pop songs are way too low for young children. I'll have a think though.

Would he compromise with musical theatre?

Is he advanced enough for Bruce's part in Revolting Children? Might he a bit young for that though.

I think he will! We started with Bare Necessities and he liked that. He has good tone over 2 octaves :)

Why don't you look at the syalluses for Trinty and associated board grades. How much singing experience does he have? Youtube have loads of videos so he could pick a song he likes.

Try the LCM Music Theatre syllabus as well.
ABRSM is very outdated & classical, trinity is mixed.

Disney opens up a load of options, then.

Musicals are a good idea. When I grow up, from Matilda, or Electricity from Billy Elliot would be good.

Talking of Billy Elliot The a Letter is beautiful but only if you can cope with it.

Look at Broadway version of Peter Pan, I know there's at least one

Most nights I'm searching and she doesn't give in. Gets the music one day, practices next day, can have it to concert standard the next day. If its harder Italian or German it takes a day longer.
Repertoire is fantastic, but please let me know if I might have missed a gem somewhere.

ABRSM syllabus for singing is filled with disney 'favourites'

Lots of Frozen songs, etc.

ABRSM has mixture of songs. balletgirlmum some of those songs really hard to sing well. I don't think many nine year olds could sing "little people" well. Disney has some lovely songs, but they are difficult. Is the nine year old a beginer?

I would avoid Frozen apart from Do you want to build a snowman as they are written for mature adult voices.

Ds sang Little People at age 9 but I did say the Matilda songs might be too old, dd used Quiet for an audition aged 10/11 & ds sang Electricity aged 10.

Dh coached a 10 year old who got down to the final few to play Charlie on the West End hence my suggesting Almost Nearly Perfect.

Have you any idea of his natural range yet?
My dds friend used to be able to sing higher than her but now at 12 he can't get anywhere near her and she is so happy.
His voice is fine though and developing and settling well, although he has been advised to quit some of his choirs and lessons for a while.
He should be ok until now, but do agree with pp about the low notes. There are so many songs that dd would love to sing, but so many people are telling her not to, so we take their advice. Their time will come, and everything comes to those that wait, but its hard when they are frustrated because they want it now.

Oh, bloody frozen should be banned from any list.
I think its fine if you are a little girl and not trained to sing.
If you have a placed voice it could do some serious harm.
The songs from Wicked, exactly the same.
The natural voice of a child boy or girl is descant, like a recorder.
Outside this by one note is fine if the child can manage this but low G or F they are having a laugh.

DS1's music teacher in primary used to get them to sing Coldplay. She was a brilliant musician, so maybe she knew these were well within their range? Paradise was one. Yellow too, I think.
