Music exams - how much does a pianist charge ?

Can I ask if anyone can tell me how much a pianist would charge to accompany an exam? Does it depend on the grade?

We were charged £10 for grade 1 flute if that helps.

We have usually paid about £30 for entry level grades including 1 short pre-rehearsal.

We were charge £7 a session for rehearsals and the grade 7 exam which I thought was a bargain considering how good the pianist was.

Thank you all. Seems quite a wide variation. This is Gr 3, and for 2/3 practices too but our accompanist is a friend and I don't want to take for granted.

I charge my usual lesson rate for rehearsals (30 minutes, £15) and then the exam fee depends on where the exam is and how much travel is involved and also whether I'm accompanying other students (if I have 6 or 7 in a row at the same centre then it's cheaper). Also the level of the exam as well - grade 1 cheap, little prep required, grade 8 level the piano parts are often as difficult as the solo part so lots of prep.

So for grade 3 I'd say, 2 30 minute rehearsals plus the exam at a local centre I'd charge around £40. For a recent grade 8 I charged £100 for 3 hour long rehearsals and the exam.

We have just paid £55 for DD's Grade 5, including two rehearsals beforehand.

Incidentally, that is almost identical to the exam fee itself. Well worth it, because I usually accompany her, but one of the pieces was way beyond me this time.

£40 I think for grades 7 and 8, 1 rehearsal . Until then DH did it and I'd absolutely recommend a professional accompanist.

Dh charges the cost of a lesson as he accompanies his own pupils. No extra rehearsals needed as they have prepared in lesson time.

Our LA charges

£10 grades 1-3 10- 15 min rehearsal
£15 grades 4-6 20 min rehearsal
£25 grades 7-8 30 min rehearsal

I'm not sure what they charge privately as dds private teachers accompany lessons sometimes anyway so no extra required.
They accompany the exam free out of good will. I think most good teachers will do this.

Is the implication that my Dh is not a good teacher as he charges? He does charge because he has to practise the piece for several weeks beforehand and travel to the exam venue - 20 minute drive.

My friend plays for music exams. She charges her lesson rate 10 for half an hour and the same for any rehearsals needed.

No love, not at all my intention.
The accompanists we have usually sight read them at rehearsal and don't need to practice them. They tend to do several on one day so just blow the day out as a good will gesture.
The private teachers I know accompany through lessons anyway and don't have extra rehearsal, know the pieces well and also do exam free of charge.
I do know they are within their rights to charge and everybody has to earn a living, its just what we have experienced.

I can't remember what we paid for DS2 Grade 3 trombone exam but it was less than £10. Sight read on the day, with a run-through just before.

DCs secondary school is its own centre and the Woodwind teacher accompanies all the students, brass, voice, strings etc - 4 days of exams! They charge £10 for students with non-school based lessons, no charge for students but we do pay for an extra lesson beforehand with a run-through (£7).

DDS sax teacher at Primary didn't charge (she is also DCs piano teacher), but we did give her a lift to the venue so no travel costs.

DDs Primary violin teacher also charged, I think it was £10, which irritated me no end, for various reasons, not least because she hadn't read the syllabus properly until I queried it. If I hadn't DD would have gone into exam without some of it prepared.

Raspberry I think unfortunately it might be an idea to have a sticky thread about exams that includes " check the syllabus yourself don't trust the teacher" , the memorable time was DD1s being shoved back in to sing " the ash grove" just because she knew it when she had no folk song prepared for a singing exam (it was fine of course). We've also had to check scales in detail every time.

Theas I think that was where we started with the first music exams thread! I can remember posting that as a Top Tip! I always check now, although DDs jazz sax exam confused me thoroughly and I had to trust the teacher on that one!
