Pre music for a 5yo?

My 5yo is constantly making up songs and playing along on the keyboard, guitar, ukelele and all the toy instruments. I'm thinking she is ready to start kind if pre music lessons, but how o we start?

I can read music, and obviously have all those instruments (plus a cornet) but i'm thinking the way I learned (endless scales) would be a bit offputting for such a little child.

Any ideas?

Whereabouts in the country are you? London and other cities all have places you can do music even at that age.

In the north east, but money is pretty tight.

Why don't you teach her the recorder, and to read music?

If money is tight, then music is generally expensive, so doing some yourself to set her up well for starting an instrument, may well be a good option.

If you spend the next year teaching her musical theory (reading music, key signatures, treble cleff, bars, etc) with a recorder then she'll be more ready to start learning in a year's time. And I wouldn't do just scales, you can get recorder books with basic tunes in, she'll find them much more interesting.

If money is tight recorder or ocarina is a good option. I'd go for ocarina for a 5yo as fingers could be too little for recorder which is frustrating for a child. You can get a couple of ocarinas with a book and cd for under 20 quid.

Could she not be better learning on an instrument we already have?

What about using the keyboard? There are lots of keyboard tutors aimed at young children you could use to help you.
