"Scout and proud" and "Guide with pride" sweatshirts

Is it just me, or do these slogans sound as though they've borrowed something from the Gay Pride movement? I thought that guiding/scouting organisations were just - neutral?

By neutral I mean not really getting involved with sexual preferences one way or the other - just having fun out in the fresh air. Oh dear, now I've started typing, everything seems loaded with innuendo. I just mean, having fun as a child, learning about growing up to be a responsible adult with no emphasis on sexuality at all.

I don't get how it has anything to do with sexual preferences? A girl or a boy could be wearing the former? It just means they are prou to be a Guide/Scout and I wouldn't have read it any other way

Well, " Out and Proud" is definitely a gay slogan, and XYZ Pride is too, eg Brighton Pride.

Yes, but it is not the only association of those words. I don't think they are suggesting that all scouts are gay therefore I don't see that they have anythong to do with sexuality

I'm a Brownie leader but I haven't seen or heard of these sweatshirts.

It sounds to me as if alal they have borrowed from the Gay Pride movement is a sense of taking pride in who you are and what you do, which is something we encourage in the Brownies.

They are just supposed to be fun and a way of turning one slogan into another way of looking at things.

They are from One Stop Scouting. My Beaver son, Guide daughter and I (I'm an Owl) each have one. They are fabulous quality and very snuggly.

I wouldn't want my DC wearing them because I think they have very clear 'gay' connotations. Not that I have any problem ith people being gay of course.

Jeez...some people are really weird! I'm involved with both Brownies and Guides and all the girls go home gay.

I noticed a young boy of about 10 on the beach in the summer, wearing what I thought was an 'out and proud' t-shirt. I thought it was an odd decision by his parents to let him wear it, and I spent ages trying to see whether it really did say that without wanting to be seen to be staring, iykwim! Now I've read this thread, it all makes sense!

It'll just be the assonance of 'Scout & Proud' & the rhyme of 'Guide with Pride'. Good slogans.

& if they are nicked from Gay Pride, that's great unless you're a bigoted numpty. Probably owes something to James Brown's 'Say it Loud - I'm Black & Proud' too.
