If you child does an activity seriously; how much time do they practise?

DD is doing about 6 hours a week and wants to increase it

I am a bit but wanted to get impressions about what other children do

Very little as I don't think it is encouraged in ballet to practice outside of class (thought se does a bit) and she can't practice her tap anywhere. She does lots of stretching and flexibility excercises in her bedroom though.

Her drama she tends to practice exam pieces and learn lines of scripts rather than practice as such.

Dd's actual classes take up a lot of time.

90 mins of tap & modern on a Tuesday
45 mins of ballet on a Thursday
1 hour jazz dance, 1 hour drama, 1 hour singing on a Saturday.

My ds (6) has 6 hours of gym per week at the moment, it'll increase to at least 8/9 hours after the summer if he still wants to do it. How old is your dd and what is the activity?

She is 13 & does dance - competitive Ballroom & Latin

She is also doing some street & an arts award (which is more academic)

She was doing 1hr street, 1hr Arts Award, 1hr B&L plus 1hr practice

she has just moved schools - now she is doing 1hr street, 1hr Arts Award, 2hrs B&L plus 2hrs practice

She is doing more comps now (not as many as yours) & wants to do another 1hr street

It's so hard to know if she is being pushed to hard

I think I will keep it as it is for a month or so & then see how it is

I think I am more worried because she also does Guides (2hrs) Choir/vocal group (2hrs) & drumming (1hr)

DD (8) does dance, 2.5 hrs on a Saturday and sometimes 1 hr team practice during the week. 2 hrs gymnnastics on a Tuesday and 3 hrs of drama on a Sunday (normally only 1.5 hrs but they have a big show coming up).

If she is getting close to a dance comp she will do lots mor practise, inclduing 20 mins before school every day (her choice) and if comps are near school holidays dance teacher will have them in a lot (3 days 9-3pm during Feb half term just gone).

It's a lot really, I wish she just did one activity but dance and drama go hand in hand and gym keeps her flexible for dance, vicious circle.

I guess you are right; if she wants to do a bit more it's probably OK, as long as I monitor it

My dd's are 11 and 9 and they both dance, they both do 3 hours a week split over 2 sessions. dd1 often attends an extra session if a competition is coming up, dd2 enjoys dancing but is thinking of dropping one of the sessions as she gets finds it a bit much, she enjoys the saturday morning session, but sometimes finds the after school sessions a bit much.

I think it really depends on the child, 13 is old enough to decide and as long as it's what your dd wants then I think it's fine.

ds is 14 and does 6 2hr swimming sessions a week, plus an hour of land training twice a week, plus water polo and running at school on top of school games and PE lessons

It's his choice - he loves swimming, obviously! - but it's much less than a lot of kids his age and at some point he'll have to up the training if he wants to take it to a higher level ...

My dd is 6 and does 5 hrs per week dance lessons, but is forever practicing at home. She would do much more if I let her but it cost so much money:(
