Pianists - Please can you recommend a keyboard for beginner pianists?

We're all learning the piano!

The teacher suggests we buy a keyboard instead of a piano to practise on because we've not got a very big house.

So she suggests one that is touch sensitive with 4 or 5 octaves.

Any suggestions, please?

Hi. As a music teacher and having worked in musical instrument retail I personally couldn't recommend Yamaha enough. All my instruments are Yamaha. They are excellent quality, last and play well. The company also give great customer support. Although keyboards are fine for a beginner pianist, it does tend to be a very short term solution. I would suggest you look for something like this which although is still a keyboard has some weight to the keys to make it more piano like in feel. It also has a good sized keyboard and retains many keyboard functions which will entertain your children.You could also look at stage pianos. They look like keyboards but have less functions as a rule. More importantly they have excellent piano sounds and good weighting. If you decide to continue with lessons then at some point you are probably going to have to get a piano. The clavinovas from Yamaha are great as are the Roland digital pianos. I think these two have the best feel and quality of sound. There are plenty to be found secondhand if you want to save money too, however, the older they are the poorer the quality of the piano sampled sound will be. The benefits to all of these are that you can keep them anywhere, Kids bedrooms, conservatory etc. Happy playing! HTH
