EHIC - is anything replacing it?

So EHIC is going, what is replacing it or is nothing replacing it and is it health insurance or pay your own way now? No emergency cover?
For visiting an EU country.

My DD went to France and ended up in hospital. She hadn't taken out any insurance. The cost came to £200. Because she was an EU citizen. The cost to a 3rd party national would have been £1200.
NB she had managed to lose her EHIC, but with some difficulty got cover anyway - the card was just a way of proving that you were entitled.

I applied for a GHIC card on the NHS site on 11 January, had the confirmation email but still no card. I don't need it yet so will just wait to see if it arrives.

My GHIC arrived yesterday - I applied 31/12/20. The accompanying letter says it covers me for state health care in the EU as an occasional visitor and in some other countries (it doesn't specify which). The card has a Union Jack on the front and one embedded in the hologram. All I need now is a holiday.

That's great to know they do actually exist and are slowly being sent out. I await mine. Though I can't go anywhere!! Grin

So we should have stayed in the EU so you could go on holiday?

AuldAlliance · 07/02/2021 13:29

EHIC doesn't only cover holidaymakers.

Coming out of the EU won't stop us going there on holiday but the covid restrictions continue to do so.

Chersfrozenface · 12/02/2021 14:42

Well, I received my GHIC card this morning.

Not that I can go anywhere at the moment, but when I can, I hope it will keep my travel insurance premiums a bit lower (especially given my age).

Fingers crossed.

Wait for the shrieks of protest from the SNP about the union jack being on the card!! Grin

Well being Welsh I'm not exactly thrilled myself.

But for the moment that's what we have to put up with.

Quite funny we now have a Global Health Card which covers less countries than the EU health card it replaces.
