It's an FAQ about travel from 1st Jan.

Unfortunately some of the advice in those FAQs is wrong: for some people the EHIC is still valid.

wowfudge · 27/12/2020 11:29

Probably better to check on the gov.uk website.

RudolphToldRedNoseNotSymptom · 27/12/2020 12:16

Oh, do you have a better link?

This is more up to date info. The EHIC is still valid.

RudolphToldRedNoseNotSymptom · 27/12/2020 12:23

Mine is valid until 2023. Hope that's actually the case.

Mine is valid until 2023 too and I'm assuming that will still be valid but other family members' cards run out as early as June. Is it still possible to get one in these last few days of 2020? The NHS EHIC website isn't supporting that...

cherin · 27/12/2020 18:12

I understand that all cards issued to British nationals cease to be valid regardless of the date written on them at the end of the year. Eu nationals living in the U.K. and dual citizens can still apply for the EHIC via the nhs website (“overseas health services”) and they can cover also their spouses and dependants (children and I think their grandparents?).

cherin · 27/12/2020 18:15

Errata corrige: the article posted above actually says already issued cards will be valid until expiry. But no new cards can be issued right now, I believe, as the nhs website doesnt take applications

cherin · 27/12/2020 18:27

Although this page, last updated 23.12, says the cards cease to be valid on 31.12.20. www.nhs.uk/using-the-nhs/healthcare-abroad/apply-for-a-free-ehic-european-health-insurance-card/

AnyFucker · 28/12/2020 13:51

Michael Gove has said, today, that current EHIC cards will still be in place until they expire to be replaced by a different one.

He also reiterated that comprehensive health insurance is also required, which has always been the case.

BowlerHatPowerHat · 01/01/2021 10:45

I wonder if travel insurance will have different prices then - one for those with a valid EHIC and one for those without.

Peregrina · 01/01/2021 11:39

I can't see how it won't. Insurance companies don't miss a trick. If you apply for coverage for N America the price rockets.

Here's the very latest official information, updated 31 December 2020.
