Westministenders: Peak something

The story so far

COVID has changed the world for the next few years, like a slowly exploding nuke:

  • killed well over 100,000 people
  • made many people afraid to leave their home
  • caused a Global Depression

Countries locked down because they needed the extra time to

Raise the Line while Flattening the Curve:

  1. Flatten the curve of the numbers needing healthcare to a level the system can manage

  2. Raise the capacity of their health services and public health systems - their testing and tracking process

Also, scientists desperately needed time to find out more about COVID:
how to avoid it, how to treat it

What happens next ?

Research teams around the world are working to produce a vaccine,
will become hopefully available within the next couple of years

In the meantime, treatment procedures are being developed to better treat COVID sufferers.

Also in the meantime, countries will need to gradually exit lockdown to rescue their economies from complete catastrophe.

Timing & measures for each country will be dependent on:

Death rate after peak,
health service capacity,
testing & tracing capacity etc

....and also what their govt and public deem an "acceptable" level of extra deaths & serious illness.

Possibly some countries will need to cycle in and out of lockdown,
whereas others will be able to accept the death toll with lesser social distancing measures.

The first few countries are already relaxing lockdown,
so the UK will watch, wait and hopefully learn what works and what doesn't

..... then copy these the correct way round

ITU beds - that is SO disingenuous.

My trust normally has 24 ITU beds. We currently have around 30 intubated COVID19 patients.

We reckon we can make 100 ITU beds.

Because we have stopped all non-emergency surgery and are using non ITU areas as ITU areas.

Yes it's good that we haven't needed the stretch we might have but it's NOT like there are empty ITU beds.

I remind you that BEFORE coronavirus ITU beds were running at 95% + capacity in many trusts (which is incredibly unsafe and against all guidelines)

Honeysuckle
That Cheltenham cluster is what makes me angry.
Many of those local people will have been on zero hour zero security take it or leave it employment contracts of the type that the EU wishes the UK did not have
and they were coughed on by pissed idiots from all over.

Yes, I want businesses getting back running
but I am very chilled now
that restricting customer numbers in shops may become the norm (its much more civilised and we still all get everything except yeast )
that many may cafes and cheap restaurants and over priced clothes stored may not re open, ever
that travel will become more expensive
as will food

but Brexit will weaken workers rights against the big businesses who are currently being propped up by Sunak's borrowing

It is very insulting to British scientists to think they would make a mistake that no other country does
and wilfully refuse to look at what other countries do wrt vaccine

And insulting to doctors. I actually think it less likely that patients in Britain will receive unnecessary or harmful treatments or vaccines than in most other countries.

Coronavirus prompts a destruction of US jobs without parallel

news.sky.com/story/coronavirus-a-destruction-of-us-jobs-without-parallel-11977775

The increase in US unemployment caused by the pandemic appears to be even greater than in other comparable economies.
......
one in six Americans of working age and still fit for work have filed claims for unemployment benefits during the last month.

Mistigri

I had a parental birthday phone call today
asking why everybody in the UK is breaching the Lockdown and why the doctors are lying.

I reminded said parent that our news is covering the multiple masked protests in the USA against lockdown

My other parent also phoned me for my birthday to tell me how unbearably lonely, but safe they feel

Give me the NHS against many other systems any day Smile

This is serious:

Ministers fear "hairdressers may have to stay shut for another six months" meaning Britain is "braced for big barnets"

This is serious and infuriating:

Hospitals have raised the alarm about "failings" at a privately run coronavirus testing centre

This could be a serious row - BJ may have a relapse until it's over

The Daily Telegraph reports the prime minister will return to Downing Street to "face growing cabinet unrest over the extent of the lockdown" on Monday.

The Cambridges are weirdly matchy-matchy in that Torygraph photo, like a super-tasteful Farrow & Ball paintchart.

Perhaps it's an optimistic attempt to reinforce the 'suits all shades of blue' note that the Torygraph has tried (and failed) to hit with the "Johnson back at the controls on Monday" warning headline.

missclimpson · 24/04/2020 07:14

Wearing blue for the NHS apparently.

AuldAlliance · 24/04/2020 09:54

Interesting.
I didn't know blue was the NHS colour.
Belatedly realised I was all in navy blue yesterday...not very tasteful F&B, though, more the results of a hasty rummage through the wardrobe.

Peregrina · 24/04/2020 11:44

The logo has blue writing on, but otherwise, I wouldn't have known.
I am afraid, I think their gestures are rather pointless and designed for show.

I was all in blue yesterday too, but that was just because that was what I happened to put on.
