Just that really.

Why would it?

KenDodd · 15/03/2020 13:17

Because we are out of the European medicines agency, out of the European pandemic early warning system, not attended meetings with European health ministers etc.

I feel like the early warning system is sort of redundant at this point tbh. I'll read up on the rest, thanks for the link.

KenDodd · 15/03/2020 13:18

On the other hand you might think Brexit might mean we have better access to medicines or vaccines, I don't know, that's why I'm asking.

I was a Remainer (now a Rejoiner). It's confirmed my beliefs. This is an international pandemic and needs international cooperation. Brexit is going to make a terrible situation so much worse.

yellowhammers · 15/03/2020 13:26

I am a leaver and this cv has confirmed for me that leaving was right.
We are managing so much better than the EU countries.

BecauseReasons · 15/03/2020 13:32

I'm not much for speculation tbh, but if immunity is acquirable through vaccines it should also be acquirable through the means of contracting the illness. Given that the latter is currently the government plan, I daresay many of us will be immune to it anyway by the time the vaccine rolls around. And given the growing anti-vaccine sentiment in this country, with mistrust of the MMR that has decades of evidence to back its safety, I'm not certain that a speedily approved vaccine would have much uptake here anyway.

ssd · 15/03/2020 13:35

@yellowhammers, I'm going to remind you of the post above in a few weeks time.

Jason118 · 15/03/2020 13:36

Nope, it was a shit idea originally and it's a shit idea now.

BeuatifulHorrorStory · 15/03/2020 13:54

It's just reinforced my remain/rejoin stance.
Being in the EU in terms of trade etc in a global recession is much more palatable than being alone.

Danetobe · 15/03/2020 15:32

It's confirmed my suspicion that the UKs relationship with the EU is small fry compared to for example, climate change, public health, inequality, poverty, mass migration etc etc etc. Spending so much time, money and political capital as well as trashing a broadly decent international reputation to carry out such a pointless task is absolute madness.

KenDodd · 15/03/2020 16:37

It is funny (peculiar) that we have become so entrenched in our Brexit view it colours everything.

OP posts:
NoBoojustNo · 15/03/2020 16:42

Yellowhammers are you being deliberately obtuse? Have you read today's figures?

KenDodd · 15/03/2020 16:42

@yellowhammers

We are managing so much better than the EU countries.

In what way? We certainly seem to be doing things differently. Do you think if we were still in the EU our ability to face CV would be compromised and in what way?

Genuine questions. I voted Remain and am really trying to see some benefits to Brexit. If someone could show me that during this crisis we are better out of the EU because of ... x, y and z, that would go a long way to moving me.

To be fair both UK and Italy got their first case on the same day and we are so far doing much better and have delayed the start of the peak by couple of weeks

We expect to follow Italy’s peak but will try to protect the elderly at that time which Italy didn’t

Jason118 · 15/03/2020 16:50

Except that they didn't, otherwise you are 100% correct.

Doubletrouble99 · 15/03/2020 16:50

This hasn't changed my leave views one bit. If anything it has reinforced my thoughts that we need to have the ability to decide on our own policies. In this age of 24 hour media and easy access to conference call and skype I don't think us not being part of the EU is making any difference at all. Each country is deciding on their own policies so can't see where the EU is coming into this at all.

Binting · 15/03/2020 16:52

No

Theworldisfullofgs · 15/03/2020 16:52

Nope. Was always and still is a totally shit idea.

Sunshine1239 · 15/03/2020 17:18

These suggest otherwise Jason

I had 29th for Italy, but ho hum.

yellowhammers · 15/03/2020 21:44

KenDodd,
I have no interest in moving you.

The response in the EU countries confirms what we knew anyway which is that each country in the EU has a high degree of autonomy, including decisions over border control.

bellinisurge · 16/03/2020 09:19

Trying to be a bit less judgy about people who heralded the buffoon we now have as PM. And the people whose stupid navel gazing nonsense drove people to support him in desperation.
