Just came on to wish all the posters and lurkers a happy new year. I hope it's better times ahead for everyone. It's all been so depressing I haven't kept up with much since the GE. I looked at the end of the proper thread but didn't fancy posting my New Year's message there.

I'll miss people off if I start posting names but good thoughts go especially to the posters living with illness or disabilities, either you or as a carer, the posters that struggle financially and the ones that volunteer their time to help others, socially or politically! And the posters that were bereaved this year. The first year is the hardest.

I hope 2020 is better for everyone.

Thanks Apile. I too stayed away from the threads of late - for the sake of my mental health really. Wishing a happy and harmonious New Year to all Westminstenders - we can but hope. Who knows what we’ll be facing this time next year...

I've sort of steered clear, too, tho I do dip in and out. It does all feel a bit hopeless, if I'm honest.

After Dominic Cummings' job advert for 21 year olds, Layla Moran coming out as pansexual, the Australian prime minister's denial of climate change, and the U.S. about to overturn Roe vs Wade, I feel locked in a box of fucking madness.

Thank you to the volunteers.

Here's hoping Brexit will go well, and if not we can fix it, and make it less bad. I fear we are going to need the volunteers more this year.

This decade is 3 days old and already feels make-or-break... not sure I like the look of it so far...

On the menu we have:
Galloping climate change (Australia burning, Amazon burning)
Oceans dying
Economic models at breaking point (threat of automation, rising cost of living and debts, increased unemployment or precarious working contracts, socialised models like the NHS at risk across Europe etc.)
Potential regional war in the ME (hopefully not global)
Political crises everywhere (whole continents are unstable: Latin America for instance)
Rising global inequalities + environmental + political crises are a lethal cocktail.
Add to it a pandemic (ok- that one's a very dark prospect) and I'm not sure human society could survive...
