Speaker Bercow is gone.

Speculation that Johnson is parachuting into Rutland.

Rumours that the Brexit Party won't contest the election.

A new speaker to be elected on Monday.

Parliament to dissolve next week.

Brexit? Oh we've forgotten that until Friday 13th...

I am very happy as it does not look like Bozo will get a bounce from England winning the World Cup - lots of celebrations in this house about that 😂

mrslaughan · 02/11/2019 10:53

Much hilarity in our house as a shot is shown of South Africa's name being engraved in the cup when the game is not over....... I'll shut up now

RedToothBrush · 02/11/2019 10:57

Itv press Centre @itvpresscentre
ITV will show the first head-to-head debate between Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbyn on 19th November. Details of further multi-party debate and comprehensive general election coverage in due course

Why are ITV playing to the narrative that it's Con v Lab?

As I say, the LDs will be squeezed out over the course of the campaign and it looks like the media are very much part of framing it as a two horse race when polling suggests it really isn't.

@RedToothBrush
And as someone - maybe a Lib Dem pointed out in an interview- with a huge election issue being Brexit - not representing the remain voice.
The bloody media.....

RedToothBrush · 02/11/2019 11:01

David Aaronovitch @Daaronovitch
I'm not a media lawyer but I am wondering if there are grounds to appeal @ITV's disgraceful decision to have a Tory/Labour only debate to Ofcom.

Replies are suggesting no, but it might be challenged anyway. Possibly in court...

... Which feeds a certain narrative in its own right.

I'm a Scot Wink - but I was born in South Africa Grin

Couldn't support them in 1995 (because they'd have said they'd have won all along if they'd be allowed to play which they indeed did then say ) but this time round I was happy to go with my birth country Grin

....quite apart from being relieved that BJ didn't get a patriotic bounce Grin

Dh, ds and I loved watching the cup being engraved before the end of the game Grin I was only allowed into the living room to watch once SA were well ahead as I'm seen as bad luck Hmm

BigChocFrenzy · 02/11/2019 11:13

This is the kind of problem that affects those who are powerless on low wages,
but the I'm-all-right-Jill types never notice:

Keir Starmer@Keir_Starmer

Asda is threatening to sack its workers unless they sign a punishing new contract.

This is wrong on so many levels.

That’s why I’m supporting the @GMB_union’s campaign to get Asda to do the right thing.

Oakenbeach · 02/11/2019 11:28

But given I am in Gauke's constituency (who I have never voted for in the past) - his huge majority means my vote is worthless

I used to live there.... It will probably stay Tory, but it’s not a lost cause as:

  1. it voted LD at the Euro elections and it’s demographics are pro-Remain
  2. LDs had a bad election in 2017 so they’re coming from a low base
  3. Gauke is standing down so it’s no longer “his” seat. Tories will no longer have a pro-Remain incumbent who’s generally well liked.
OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/11/2019 11:31

rather late pmk

ArseDarkly · 02/11/2019 11:31

So that 'fracking ban' they were putting out is just temporary? Lying gits...

Basilpots · 02/11/2019 11:32

Will the decision to exclude Swinson (and other party leaders) be an itv one or Con/Lab one ?

Should be all of them or none of them.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 02/11/2019 11:35

Should be all of them or none of them.

Only Corbyn or Johnson are going to be PM

Oakenbeach · 02/11/2019 11:35

Should be all of them or none of them.

But where do you draw the line... Greens, UKIP, WEP, MRLP?

Basilpots · 02/11/2019 11:36

So that 'fracking ban' they were putting out is just temporary? Lying gits...

In an area they are looking to try and buy votes and have ignored as much as possible in recent years.

They really do treat people as idiots.

HS2 and Heathrow runway will be the next things on ice.

mrslaughan · 02/11/2019 11:36

@prettybird - I have never before supported the springboks- basically because of memories of their tours in NZ under apartheid- but then when that fell the teams were still all white. On top of that stories would seep out of on field racism directed at the Maori and Polynesian players.
Since leaving Nz all those years ago, we haven't really followed rugby. What struck me - and I was delighted about at this World Cup is how many coloured players the springboks has. That is something to be celebrated.

Oakenbeach · 02/11/2019 11:36

LDs will get a boost from the outrage accompanying their exclusion.... but they have slipped in the polls somewhat lately.

RedToothBrush · 02/11/2019 11:38

It's an itv decision.

However the Tories / Labour might have said 'we will only do a TV debate if...' and itv have gone along with it to get the scope on coverage.

It's more of the same problem of spin doctors setting the terms and the media going along with it because getting to the heart if the matter is less important than getting ahead of their competitors.

All media outlets should be going 'fuck this shit' if they have a real commitment to proper journalism and putting the public interest first.

Basilpots · 02/11/2019 11:40

Only Corbyn or Johnson are going to be PM

But they are not the only ones you vote for.

Smaller parties need a voice. Look how many more votes Lib Dem’s got when Clegg was allowed to debate in 2010.

With zero ‘Remain’ voice when Brexit it is a massive issue.

Might as well only play MCFC and LFC every week they are the only ones going to win the title.

RedToothBrush · 02/11/2019 11:41

But where do you draw the line... Greens, UKIP, WEP, MRLP?

Any party who has a reasonable chance of winning a seat isn't difficult to define.

That is my suspicion.

mrslaughan · 02/11/2019 11:44

@Oakenbeach - it has been speculated - but I didn't think it was confirmed? Will research.
Yes v pro remain - with a small section of v vocal angry leavers, who leap on any local social media and try and control the narrative. Absolute bullies - who have no real answers , that just shout slogans. Given the way they talk about Gauke online I can't imagine what abuse he has had.

Basilpots · 02/11/2019 11:44

Can’t complain about a two party system that needs shaking up and then allow MSM to show only that.

mrslaughan · 02/11/2019 11:45

Who would we complain to at itv - I am quite incensed by it.

Basilpots · 02/11/2019 11:48

Who would we complain to at itv - I am quite incensed by it.

There is a petition on Change.org.

RedToothBrush · 02/11/2019 11:51

Corbyn: The Mass Media is against me.

Also Corbyn: Yes I'll do a Mass Media Program which gives me a political advantage over the LDs

Johnson: The Liberal Elite are against the people and control the establishment.

Also Johnson: Yes I'll do an event which is decided by the Liberal Elite and is against the public interest as a whole.

Johnson and Corbyn: We stand for change against the establishment.

Swinson: Really? Are you two taking the fucking piss or what?
