Is Johnson now going to pact with Farage?

I’m trying to work out why there were 100 amendments to try to stop the “stop no deal” bill, then they gave up to allow the bill to go through.

Now corbyn will vote for an election, maybe.

Farage wants no deal. Boris wants no deal. If they cooperate and don’t stand against each other in individual constituencies it’s likely they could form a majority government. Brexit party won’t vote for any WA so it would be no deal. They’d have to overturn the “stop no deal” legislation first.

It’s early and I’m grasping, but why did they u-turn and allow the stop no deal bill go through? What has Boris got up his sleeve?

My guess is he wants Parliament to agree an election. But ... but ... but...
Too early for Gin

Never too early in these difficult times GinGrin

Even though it utterly scuppered any hope of negotiating a better deal, the bill went through because it could not be stopped.

We are completely stuck with the May deal now.

I don't think Boris is wedded to 'no deal' - he just wants out (no customs union, ie backstop) and knew that there was no prospect of a different deal without no deal as leverage.

Farage also wants out, and wants a hard deal of no deal.

I'm not sure they're totally aligned but they will have to work out how to manage the risk of splitting the vote

MrsSlocombesPussy · 05/09/2019 08:09

From what I've read, Labour won't agree to an election until after 31st October

Snowy111 · 05/09/2019 08:34

But BJ and Cummings are going to bypass the fixed term parliaments act by bringing in a bill so they only need a majority, not a 2/3 majority. And the SNP have said they will vote for an early election next week (as long as the “stop no deal” bill goes through fully), so they would have the majority.

I think they have purged the party of dissenters so that they can get walkovers in, who will commit to voting with BJ. But he’ll need the Brexit party too to get a majority in an election - that’s my belief.

sajid javid has just been on radio 4 and was trounced by the interviewer - he clearly told multiple lies about his spending spree yesterday - of course the spends arent election bribes Hmm

But they don't have a majority, so that bill won't pass, so they can't circumnavigate the FTPA.

NoWordForFluffy · 05/09/2019 08:48

I'm not sure it'll go through like that.

We shall see. Times are very interesting!

To OP

The block no deal bill voted for by MPs has been presented to the House of Lords for comment. House of Lords is not obliged to approve the no deal bill. They will take a vote like MPs in House of Commons

The 100 amendments are presented by those MPs who do not want to the no deal bill to be passed. House of Lords will have to vote on each of the amendments before they can reach a final decision.

Basically the anti no deal MPs are trying to swamp the House of Lords until Parliament shuts down next week.

Those who are against no deal want the bill to be passed in law before a general election takes place. This, they hope, will act as a safeguard against Johnson, or a coalition between Johnson and Farage, gaining a majority and being able to force no deal through.

Considering how Parliament is split I don't think it will make a lot of difference because EU has said they will not revisit the previous WA. So the WA, that was rejected 3 times before, would go back to the same Parliament that rejected it 3 times before.

If WA not agreed by Parliament then either another extension to Article 50 is agreed by both EU and UK or UK leaves with no deal. Even if no deal is passed in law it does not oblige the EU to agree continually to extensions.

Basically UK Government, Parliament and Politics has become a Punch and Judy show.

Songsofexperience · 05/09/2019 09:43

Farage also wants out, and wants a hard deal of no deal.

And don't forget both Farage and Johnson are TRUMP'S MEN.

Remember that line in Years&Years: 'our bosses are American'?
Coming soon...

Mystery that is my point - at around 2am this morning they withdrew all the amendments to allow the “stop no deal” bill to go through. Why?

Ask Cummings, he's the evil genius.

My theory is they all thought they were capable of pulling an all-nighter, then slowly realised those days were behind them as it got later and their Horlicks beckoned Grin

YeOldeTrout · 05/09/2019 22:07

There are quite a few maneuvers Johnson can still try to get his election b4 15 October. These options may actually be sped up by letting the No-No-Deal bill get thru.

BJ is over-confident. T-May thought she was going to trounce home in 2017. Don't under-estimate how good a campaigner Corbyn is, or how good BJ is at showing everyone his own incompetence.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/09/2019 22:12

I'm wondering the same thing Snowy

PerkingFaintly · 05/09/2019 22:17

Mm, that comment about Horlicks beckoning them home has reminded me of a Tory trick in the last few years.

The Lords had sat late into the evening on something (health & social welfare? I can't remember), finally had the vote and most left the chamber...

...And then a little troop of Tory Lords quietly filed back in and held a vote overturning the previous vote.

So, just a little alert about that one. Although obviously no one would be so devious and dishonest as to attempt such skulduggery again.Hmm

megletthesecond · 05/09/2019 22:49

Probably Sad.

Snowy111 · 06/09/2019 07:43

Heard on radio 4 this morning that he is likely that the tories will lose 10 seats in Scotland if there is an election so he needs to do something!
