If your passport expires early next year...

have you already applied for a new one? Mine is due for renewal early April 2020 and I'm trying to decide if I should just go ahead and apply for my new one now. What's everyone else doing?

Mine doesn't expire until April, unless you need to travel there is no issue of course but I would suggest renewing before booking tickets / allowing 3 months

You no longer get creditted with unexpired time so not worth doing too soon.

renewed mine and nippers earlier this month, ours had completely ran out so no issue with expiry time and they only took just over a week to come but no longer have European Union written on the front

Only do it when you've just got 6 months left on it - unless you're needing to travel at that point, in which case do it a month earlier.

We renewed in march with October expiry dates as we were travelling at the end of June and didn't know whether we would need 6 months remaining

Mine expires in May and I haven't decided what to do yet. I'll probably renew it in January to be on the safe side.

Mine expires in January. I'm not planning on renewing any time soon.

I'm hoping to go away over Christmas. So, with the 6 months remaining rule, I'm thinking it would be best to just bite the bullet and do it now.

I'd get it early just because I'd rather have the burgundy one that the post-Brexit blue one

Mine expires March next year and DS1's expires in April. I'm far too skint to even think about renewing them. So just going to cross my fingers and hope for the best.

Mine expires in a couple of months, I'm not planning to use it but I should get a new one just in case.
