Sky reporting that Honda Plant may close

Not confirmed by Honda as yet but no denial.

3500 jobs at risk and many more in the supply chain. Heart goes out to those involved, but they are highly skilled workers so let hope if this is the case they will find new jobs quickly.

There does seem to be a pattern emerging. Vital investment in the UK automotive sector has dropped 76% since the vote, despite government funding to prop up the sector.

We were told this was project fear, well it turns out it's project reality. I fear Honda won't be the last, Ford and Mini have both said they will pull out if there is a Hard Deal Brexit.

Bloody hell

In Swindon? Well, they could go and work at the MINI plant, I suppose. Oh, hang on ...

PinkOboe · 18/02/2019 14:54

“Highly skilled” I think you mean highly niche

VanillaSugarr · 18/02/2019 14:55

And so it starts... Sad

LegoPiecesEverywhere · 18/02/2019 14:57

Swindon was a leave area. Wonder how the people who voted leave feel now when they know they are about to lose their job. It is a niche industry and it is highly unlikely they will get another job in that industry. Thanks to Brexit the car manufacturing industry is dead.

My husband works at Honda. The disgusting part of this is that none of the workforce were told before the story broke. I rang my husband half expecting him to tell me it was a false story and he didn't know anything about it. Unfortunately I don't think there are going to be enough automotive jobs left in this country, and he's going to have to look for something else.

DontMakeMeShushYou · 18/02/2019 15:05

That's because Honda haven't made an announcement yet. It's Sky that have broken this story but it's all speculation still, although it does look fairly likely.

StoorieHoose2 · 18/02/2019 15:07

BBC now also reporting it - www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-47282603

jasjas1973 · 18/02/2019 15:34

...but nothing at all to do with brexit..... lol!

Peregrina · 18/02/2019 15:42

I hope the Leavers are pleased. At least we in Oxford voted Remain. Not that it will help if we crash out and BMW pulls out, but at least we won't have brought it on ourselves.

More seriously - will any of these be the straw which breaks the camels back, and makes May realise that she has to cancel Brexit, or will it be appease the ERG until the bitter end, no matter how much damage is done to the UK.?

ReflectentMonatomism · 18/02/2019 15:43

My husband works at Honda.

How did you and he vote?

CoxwellHuge · 18/02/2019 15:52

We both voted remain.

CoxwellHuge · 18/02/2019 15:53

We were then and still are now absolutely gutted at the result of the vote.

AutumnCrow · 18/02/2019 15:57

I'm just watching it on the news. Even the Conservative MP for Swindon had no idea. He looked shell-shocked.

Ah well, he's still in a job, he can afford to pull a sad face while Rome burns.

AutumnCrow · 18/02/2019 15:58

I'm very sorry, Coxwell. This must be awful.

CoxwellHuge · 18/02/2019 15:58

There has still been no announcement in the factory

CoxwellHuge · 18/02/2019 15:59

Thank you Autumncrow. Just can't wait to get home and see DH and talk it through. He's been there 20 years.

AutumnCrow · 18/02/2019 16:07

I was talking to my son today, Coxwell, he's doing a hard science degree, and I suspect he's already looking towards the Netherlands.

I wish you lots of luck and I really feel for you all.

DonaldTwain · 18/02/2019 16:24

This is just a fucking disaster. No doubt we’ll be treated to more of that Rees mogg cunt telling us how simply marvellous it all is.
God knows how angry those affected who had the wit to vote remain must be.

SeeYouLaterUserData · 18/02/2019 16:27

CoxwellHuge very sorry for you and your DH Sad

bellinisurge · 18/02/2019 16:30

@CoxwellHuge , I'm very sorry.

Paddingtonthebear · 18/02/2019 16:31

Honda due to make announcement tomorrow morning. Speculation to close by 2021

AutumnCrow · 18/02/2019 16:35

Coxwell, your DH may have a job til 2022 (although not certain) while you take stock and look around.

Twat Tory MP who knew nothing an hour ago now blaming global forces not brexit. Where to even start ...

Peregrina · 18/02/2019 16:40

I don't doubt that global forces are partly to blame, but that would only apply if Honda stopped making cars altogether, then it would definitely be the case - like we no longer have blacksmiths in every town and village to repair carts and shoe horses. Since we are told there is overcapacity in the car production market, it makes business sense to close the plant which is going to give them the most costs.

Miljah · 18/02/2019 16:48

Well, those at Honda in Swindon who voted Leave can party along with those at Schaeffler in Llanelli, and those at Avent in Glemsford, Suffolk, united in their turkeys-voting-for-Christmas solidarity.

So sorry for the Remainers, there. They should get dibs on any remaining jobs.
