I have no sympathy. They got themselves into this mess.

HerLadySheep · 29/01/2019 21:04

@HerondaleDucks that's no very fair, lots of them had no vote in the referendum.
The people who voted to leave do deserve all they get though

HerondaleDucks · 29/01/2019 21:14

Sorry I read pensioners and it was a knee jerk reaction. I did see an article in the guardian about ex pats in Spain who voted to leave the EU lol so I'm sure some did.

Ellie56 · 29/01/2019 21:59

The ex pats weren't eligible to vote in the referendum if they'd been out of the country for more than 15 years. That's why a lot of them were up in arms as they would have voted remain.

WrongKindOfFace · 03/02/2019 19:56

I feel very, very sorry for those who voted remain, or who would have done if they’d had the vote. But what on earth were the leavers thinking?

Apileofballyhoo · 03/02/2019 20:28

I read that Guardian article. Expats in Spain seem to be a combination of Remainers and Leavers. I would have thought it didn't make sense to want the UK to leave the EU if you live elsewhere in the EU and rely on EU arrangements for pensions and healthcare, but it doesn't seem to make a difference to some.

I know somebody who lived elsewhere in the EU and voted leave because they didn't want foreigners in the UK. The irony. Oh, they had no intention of ever returning tot he UK but didn't think the EU offered them any benefits (despite living and working visa free in an EU country.

fullfact.org/health/how-much-does-uk-recover-health-costs-eu/

The UK paid out £674 million in health costs to European countries, but received only £49 million in return

The UK paid out £674 million in health costs to European countries, but received only £49 million in return

so what does that mean @Clavinova ? To me it looks like EU nationals in the UK cost the UK £49 million which was repaid, but the UK nationals in the EU cost the UK £674 million - which can't be repaid ?

Numbers without context are just that. Numbers. Not reasoned answers in a sensible discussion.

I wish you hadn't posted that video. It makes me feel a bit ill and that they should be forcibly sent to live in Stoke or equivalent.

Clavinova · 04/02/2019 13:46

DGRossetti

so what does that mean @Clavinova?

In 2015, EEA countries and Switzerland claimed against the NHS for over £674 million of costs of treating people from the UK overseas. In the same year, the NHS claimed for £50 million of equivalent costs for treating EEA and Swiss citizens in the UK

However, government studies suggest that the NHS is also simply failing to charge when it is supposed to – recouping only a fraction of what should be around £340m from other countries.

The Guardian are reporting -Burden on NHS could increase after 29 March if pensioners return to UK for treatment. Perhaps it's time to redress the balance.

How is that anyone elses problem but the UK governments ?

My great Aunty is the most vocal leaver you will ever meet, half of the family have had to hide her on Facebook as she’s always posting Britain First memes.

About a month after the vote she got her money through from the divorce to her husband of fourty years, she doesn’t have a full pension as she only paid the married woman national insurance.
She has put ALL her money into buying a house in Spain and can’t see why we all think she’s insane.
