It's inconceivable that the actual terms of a Brexit can be agreed without any further kind of approval (not necessarily a referendum) since 100% of 52% of the population had no clue what they were actually voting for.

This poll was not conducted by Channel 5. They merely commissioned it, the polling was done by Yougov, one of the best-regarded pollsters.

It is true.

Everyone who decided to vote Leave did so for a reason but, as there are no plans for how Brexit will look, those reasons are meaningless- they are, by definition, not what they actually voted for.

I voted in that yougov poll, the questions were rubbish. After 15 mins of questions about ins and outs of boring landlords insurance there was one slipped in at the end with no context at all.

It was a totally biased question simply commissioned to hastily counter the profile the govt petition has generated.

It did NOT ask if as a voter you felt the outcome was legitimate based on campaign promises and expected outcomes.

It did NOT ask if as a voter you felt the outcome was legitimate based on voter turnout and winning margin (which by the way, the petition WAS based on)

It did NOT ask if as a voter you felt there should be a further level or approval for the actual terms of a Brexit to ensure you were getting what you expected (second referendum or not).

It simply said - do you think there should be another referendum.

Meaningless question, meaningless result.

When someone has finally worked out what brexit actually is, they are going to HAVE to seek approval for it from the country, either via a GE or an election.

The reason being that people voted for leaving the EU, but not for where they wanted to be afterwards. I think it will be politically difficult to proceed with any of the options without the support of voters - especially as the most likely contender, EEA membership, is fundamentally unsatisfactory most remain AND leave voters.

The question asked was in/out Euro. Didn't ask for a plan. Just state your preference. Some voted in as they wanted to keep the status quo vis a vis the UK place in EU. Some voted out as they didn't want that. End of.

Here here Mistigri, hence my conviction that this poll is unhelpful and completely misses the point when it comes to understanding why people are challenging the result.

A question like this in the way it was phrased in the yougov poll is frankly endorsing tit for tat politics at a time when we need to be examining our views, our motives, our methods and our future harder than we ever have before.

It's quite clear - people voted to Leave the EU. Not to have politicians backtrack and wriggle out of actually having to trigger Article 50. Not to say "but we've forgotten how to make our own decisions!" Not to have a second referendum where "Yes I still want to leave the EU" isn't an option. Not for the government to call an election in the hope they won't have to go through with Brexit.

It wasn't possible for there to be a detailed and certain guarantee of what would happen next either way. The campaign groups weren't political groups in a position to make that happen. The vote has happened, and now the political parties should sort themselves out, trigger Article 50 and lead the country out of the EU.

"What leave looks like" is secondary and has many possible "right answers". I believe it will be thrashed out successfully. A variety of groups and individuals are now putting forward some very positive visions of the Britain we'd like to be from now on. I trust the British people on both sides of the referendum to create a country which will be tolerant, successful, outword looking and all the other qualities we need.

Been...perhaps The Leave team took a leaf out of his book then. Who knows? Their tactics succeeded. I'm remain, but just making the point that many voters would have interpreted the question literally, that they were being asked to state a preference. Dreadful drafting error really by the govt, if it was an error.

what we do know, is what the EU is, how it reacts how it works what it does or - rather massively fails to do at every turn.

We can see its chaos, power mad hungry beast that needs feeding, chucking more and more into its slobbering, salivating greedy mouth.

We can observe that, and say, actually, lets try something else.

I voted 'leave' last week and I'd vote leave again. Nothing has happened to change my mind.

However given the closeness of the polls before the vote, I cannot believe that no one had made any plans for a leave win. Just proves the total incompetence of the politicians though.

I agree. Unfortunately we might have waited for ever for any politicians to come up with a leave plan. The time to leave the EU is long overdue. The politicians will all have to get their act together now. If they don't deliver, they'll be out. This is what leaving the EU is all about; holding our politicians to account and seeing that removal van outside no. 10 if needs be.

I would say no to another referendum because I think the country has made its democratic choice and we have to live with the result.

Agree with this.
6% of 'LEAVE' and 28% of 'DID NOT VOTE' think there should be a second referendum suggesting 'bregret'.
If those 6% of 'LEAVE' want to change to remain, that would be just over one million votes which is enough to swing it back towards remain.
However, it's difficult to tell which way the 'DID NOT VOTE' group would vote.
I know one leave voter who only voted as a protest vote thinking leave would lose, and is now really regretting it and would change their vote to remain if they could.
Another leave voter :-

1. didn't realise that the economy would dive like it has
2. didn't know that if we want to go into EEA we will have to accept freedom of movement (like Norway), and is blaming the remain campaign for not making that clear. This voter is now wondering if they did the right thing.
