Is the lack of democracy the reason you voted to LEAVE the EU?

I am a British who has lived outside the UK for 20 years in Europe and the US. I was surprised to find that all the friends and family (in and outside London) that I have contacted voted to leave. The number one reason was the lack of democracy. My brother said that the European Parliament cannot create new law or get rid of law. Is this true? Excuse my ignorance but my focus has been on North American politics for some time. They all dislike unelected bureaucrats having dismissive power over elected leaders.

I voted out, because I believe that the EU will harm our democracy in the years to come. A win for remain could have been used to say that the people had given their approval to further integration. I believe that it was a case of get out now or not at all. We would have been left in a situation where we were merely one of 28 countries and there is no guarantee they would listen to out viewpoint.

The EU is far more democratic than the UK, with your unelected head of state and the House of Lords!

Just one more instance of voters falling for soundbite politics, who cares if the quotes are true as long as they sound good and are short enough to hashtag?
