EU Referendum - Racists and Xenophobes

Right I am getting a bit sick of remain voters who are insisting that Leave Voters condone racism and xenophobia and have not spoke out against it.

The reality is on my thread and on many other threads I and other leave voters have not only not condoned racism, we have condemned it.

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/eu_referendum_2016_/2671336-Why-I-Voted-to-Leave-the-EU?pg=1

UKIP has been around for years, Far Right groups have been around for much much longer, they exist in every EU country.

The Referendum did not invent these groups, it didn't give them an idea for a message, they had that hatred long before we even entered the EU.

Whilst the Referendum gave some of them a voice and brought them out from under their stones, they were still there to be challenged for their views for many years prior to this month!

If you judge a group of voters by your Facebook News Feed and a few tabloid newspapers then you show similar ignorance to what the racists do. Myself and millions of other people are not on Facebook or Twitter, Social Media is not the general public's gospel opinion.

Tackling racism and xenophobia is the responsibility of Society, which means leave voters, remain voters and non voters.

Who gets the Fishing quota is a national government decision.

Lets be honest the UK fisherman, fishing in intentional waters of other countries, to the detriment of their national industries was never going to be a sustainable thing anyway and I don't know why people pretend that it is.

JamieVardysParty · 27/06/2016 12:55

Oh that's ok, the industry is in decline anyway so who really matters if it's sped up.

We'll just throw a bit of money at them and hopefully they will go quiet.

Just demonstrating the attitude that has contributed massively to this in the first place.

smallfox1980 · 27/06/2016 13:03

How does that demonstrate that attitude?

People hark back to the golden age of fishing, before both Cod Wars, back to the glory days of empire etc.

What the heck? Why is it the right of British fishermen to go fish off the coast of Iceland, Denmark, Norway etc? But we want "control" of our own fishing areas.

The fact is racism lurks in people who voted for leave and remain.

The only way to beat it is for everyone to fight it.

I don't understand, sorry if this is a stupid question but can anyone explain..
Why do some leave voters seem to think that they have voted people out? One of the key features of Brexit was that none of the conditions of leaving were specified or known; there was never any assurance that anyone would leave the UK or that freedom of movement would definitely stop. I believe it was a mistake of theirs to be anti immigrants, but even if they were, they surely knew that reducing immigration from the EU was just a possibility.

Also, how does that fit in with wider racism? A leave vote almost guaranteed an increase in immigration from non EU countries, I think that was well known during the campaign, so if Brexit racism extends to them....well, unsurprisingly it makes no sense even according to their own misguided priorities. Can anyone explain?

Asprilla11 · 27/06/2016 16:04

I don't think the vast majority of leave voters did think that temporaryusername just some of the stupid more vocal ones.

I'll do leave supporters the courtesy of saying they are not all racists. To me, the Brexit vote was as much prompted by nihilism as it was by racism - things are shit so they are bound to be better if we just wipe it all away and start again. Which is a pretty fecking risky thing to do in any situation.
We all have a job to do to address what has prompted this nihilism but we'll have no money left to do it.
The vote has also given legitimacy to some pretty revolting acts of racism and we all have a duty to clamp down on that no matter how we voted.
And leavers pretty much ended the uk by driving Scotland out. ... I've got no suggestions for making that better.

I agree, the racists and xenophobes must be challenged. Hopefully a small amount of them will repent after some education/training.

The worse ones will have to be ostracized and reported to the police.

Or the racists could be deported to be dishwashers for the EU Commision Grin
