Stupid question - are votes by person or area?

The votes are coming in now - 382 areas to declare. My question, are the votes counted by how many people vote or what the areas vote? So is it by majority of 382 areas or the actual numbers of people?

It's decided on the actual votes per person, so the tally is what you need to pay attention to. The figure in grey just indicates how many areas have declared.

Thanks both, that's what I thought - just watching on BBC and they're declaring the areas and thought I may have got it all wrong!
