It's not all about immigration OP. And I've said it before but I'll say it again. Regardless of who is coming from where, I think it's morally wrong to enable so many fit, able, intelligent young men (because it is mainly men who come, not women and children) to leave their own countries. We should should be pumping more money into these economies, not allowing them to bleed themselves dry of their future earning workforce.

The EU, in its desperation, says that within a few months it will offer Turkey’s 77 million citizens the ability to travel to any of its 28 member states without the need for a visa. Worse, it will fast-track Turkey’s application to become a full member of the EU — and turn a blind eye to the human rights abuses of Recep Erdogan’s regime.

Problem is the article doesn't cite the source of it's information. What the EU Council of Ministers actually agreed was the fast-tracking of visa liberalisation & the "readmission" of migrants back to Turkey. Accession talks on hold were to be to re-energised.

Visa liberalisation means replacing easily forged visas with more secure machine readable passports for short term travel in the Schengen area. Uk isn't in Schengen so Turks will still require visas to come here.

To join the EU countries must fulfil the criteria set out in the Copenhagen Agreement & complete 33 of 35 policy chapters including, ones on democracy, the rule of law & rights. Turkey originally applied to become an EU member in the mid 1980s & in all that time has only provisionally completed one chapter. Once enough of the chapters have been completed all the existing EU countries must unanimously agree Turkey's EU membership. Cyprus & other states are unlikely to agree.

So Turkey won't become a member of the EU anytime soon, if ever, particularly as it appears to be going in the wrong direction in relation to democracy, rights & the rule of law.
