Former general: 'There are plans for a European army'
The former head of special forces General Sir Michael Rose - who commanded UK forces in the Falklands and UN troops in Bosnia - has today written of his reasons for supporting the leave campaign.

I heard this, it really struck a chord.

So Germany's proposal for a single EU army is being held back till after our referendum?

So much for the Euro enthusiasts on the other threads who claimed that it could never happen.

"The remorseless logic of a single European state means that the British Army will be no more and that our barracks will be filled with soldiers from a single European Army".

Strong stuff from a man who knows his onions.

The fact that defence is a national issue is within the EU treaty. Any change to this would be treaty change. UK law now states that any treaty change triggers a referendum, so there would be no benefit to the Germans witholding the suggestion, because even if they convince every member government that it's a good idea if would still trigger referendums in multiple member States and be far more disruptive than our current one.

I'm not saying that it's not an option on the table, just that if it ever became more than that, we would have to vote on it regardless, so if it's the only thing swaying your vote, I'd give it a little more thought.

That said, the vote is tomorrow and I haven't made my mind up yet. Probably should get on that

If your idea of a European army is merely men with rifles wearing EU insignia and under the control of an EU committee then meet the Eurocorps.

They've been goosestepping around with that ghastly flag since 2008 and are currently 65,000 men strong.

I must have missed the referendum on that one...
