What has the EU ever done for us?

Can you name 5 fantastically wonderful things the EU has given us that we couldn't have achieved on our own?

WellErr. Lots of British manufacturing companies have moved operations all round the world to cheaper countries - Malaysia (dyson), China, India etc. The EU is not to blame for globalisation. at least if operations move to another EU country they are bound by EU regulations on workers' rights, and not a race to the bottom as with unconstrained capitalism.

the EU is not the cause of the decline in UK manufacturing. if it were, then why does Germany have such a strong manufacturing base?

In the meantime, services - including export of services - provide a lot of current UK jobs. A significant proportion of financial services and business services jobs will be adversely affected by Brexit.

This is why the WC are giving two fingers. You are pissed off that banking and research jobs are going to be lost. They lost manufacturing, fishing and are undercut and you snear at them for being pissed off.

Actually, my biggest concern is what is happening to the atmosphere of this country. In 2012 I was so proud of the self-confident, optimistic, witty, welcoming face this country showed to the outside world and was proud to be a part of it. Now it seems like the Daily Mail comment page and the world is still watching.

That said, the loss of manufacturing and fishing are not due to the EU. Manufacturing was lost because of a combination of poor investment in skills, bad management, industrial relations and government policy. There are many economic textbooks on this. Blame Thatcher, blame Scargill, but do not blame the EU. Germany has invested in its manufacturing industry, has worked together and thrived.

Some Brexiters are claiming that we should just unilaterally allow all China and Indian imports without tariffs (or presumably any insistence on international working/product standards). What on earth do you think that will do to UK manufacturing?

Fishing - we fished the fish to near extinction. Are you really proposing no limits? Gove's sob story has been exposed as a lie.

By all means give two fingers to the government, but do so with full awareness of the consequences. A less prosperous, less tolerant, less welcoming and less influential island.

The WC BELIEVE this, they are not going to sit and read economic text books, they are not into logic and linguistics intelligence, they use other types of intelligence or they wouldn't continue to be WC, clearly there are exceptions.

Justchanged · 19/06/2016 10:48

Sorry, I was born working-class. Leave may be misinforming, but the vast majority will blame Thatcher for the collapse of manufacturing.

howtorebuild · 19/06/2016 10:56

Why are you sorry about the class you were born into? Are you still WC?

Justchanged · 19/06/2016 11:03

I said sorry as I found your comment offensive. I was born working-class but now have a middle-class job. I have found no difference in intelligence, but I've noticed a lot of wasted talent.

howtorebuild · 19/06/2016 11:07

skyview.vansd.org/lschmidt/Projects/The%20Nine%20Types%20of%20Intelligence.htm Are you suggesting the only type of intelligence that should be respected are linguistic and logic?

So you value economic text books and a MC lifestyle, you have up being WC and get offended because the WC don't value the same things you now do?

Justchanged · 19/06/2016 11:14

I'm sorry, I don't understand. I thought your post was to suggest that WC were less intelligent which I strongly disagree with. if its not then we're in agreement.

howtorebuild · 19/06/2016 11:17

There are several types of intelligence, and not all are appreciated. The WC may be using other forms of intelligence and seeing something the logic and linguistics types are not seeing and making their EU decision on their types of intelligence, which will not include for most read an economic text book.

WellErrr · 19/06/2016 11:33

I agreed with this -

This is why the WC are giving two fingers. You are pissed off that banking and research jobs are going to be lost. They lost manufacturing, fishing and are undercut and you snear at them for being pissed off.

But the idea that the WC have a different kind of intelligence and that's why they're WC is ludicrous and offensive.

howtorebuild · 19/06/2016 11:42

I think the very reason the WC are being sneared at as racist is due to linguistics. Why do you want to leave they are asked, immigration they respond. They are using intelligence to make a decision, they aren't articulating it in a way the logic and linguistics understand.

Had they used different language they wouldn't be called racist or thick. Had they said, for example, I am concerned my children will not gain an apprenticeship as I did. I notice unplanned immigration levels in my area of skills along with employers taking advantage are causing the problems. I don't feel the EU is protecting workers rights for my children, myself or immigrants who feel they can't work in their country of origin and complete with us. I want to leave the EU because it doesn't work for us.
