Turkey is furious with George Osborne for saying they will not join the EU. Calling it scandalous, calling him arrogant & the Turkish media say they will join the EU. The Turkish foreign minister also said their goal is membership and is already taking steps to join

This is in light of the fact the UK is paying £1.2 billion to help Turkey & other nations join the EU

Turkey knows it holds a very strong hand with regard to negotiating entry to the EU. Turkey can make the EU's life very awkward if it lifts the restrictions on migrants wanting to make the journey to Europe from its shores.
