How would this be done, if it hasn't happened during the time we've already been in the EU? If the EU is as unreformable as it seems, I think unrest and moves to the far right will probably continue rather than any meaningful reform.

There's an ongoing push for reform in the EU. It's been happening for years and things have been changing. I'm more confident of the ongoing reform in the EU than any chance of reform amongst the posh boys club of our own government.

40+ years' membership - and the only reform has been more and more control from Brussels, the gradual creeping towards an EU superstate of one-size-fits-all social, political and economic unity. Transfer of wealth from the richest to the poorest, transfer of the unemployment from the poorest to the richest. Future plans are for this overall process to be accelerated, expanding the EU and subsuming the individual countries into one giant federal mass.

I know Danes, Swedes and Dutch - they all envy the UK for our referendum and hope that once we're out, they can demand the same of their governments.

The EU is not going to reform any time soon, mainly because a) the powerful guys running it aren't accountable to anyone and b) there are 28 nations that have to agree every damn thing and its almost impossible to find consensus among so many nations with their own agendas.

No, I think the only way the EU will reform is if they have a massive fucking wake-up call in the shape of a powerful nation like Britain leaving and that leading to a clamour for referendums in other nations to be allowed a vote on staying/leaving. They're so bloody complacent it will take an earthquake like Brexit to shake them up.

I think if the UK leaves and if nothing catastrophic happens here overnight it might actually disintegrate.

Rubbish. There has been ongoing reform. Remember the days of Edith Cresson? There was a wave of specific reforms after that debacle. And the whistle blower Paul Van Buitenen. If you really believe there's not been any reforms in the EU then you are misinformed of how things operate.

I agree Chardonnay but the disintegration process will be slow and painful. The EU will be in a state of flux while more of the richer countries leave and poorer ones join, it won't be able to afford many of its grand ideas and will have to downsize plans, and it will end up with a rump of poor Eastern/Southern European countries and Germany in some form of political and economic union. They might change the name then.

I met some Danish civil servants the other week and they said if we vote out, then they will be close behind. Apparently there's a lot the Danes aren't happy about with the EU.
