If I get the council to collect our old (still working) washer and dishwasher, will they just get dumped? Should we donate them somewhere instead?

Getting new kitchen with integrated things - the machines we're getting rid of are definitely old, but still working.

Should we donate them? If so which organisations will come and collect them?

Your local council may have an appliance recycling scheme that then sells them on for a small fee, so check out the enviromental services part of their website for that. Or they may just send them for metal reclamation

Or join FreeCycle for your area, offer them, and someone who really wants them will probably be round this afternoon to get them. Washing machines and dishwashers are always much sought after

Freecycle them. Someone will certainly want them.

Thanks all. Freecycling is a bit awkward as we're not living in the house at the moment.

We're in London Lynette.

Have emailed the council to find out what will happen to them - couldn't find anything on website.

We give our old (but still working) appliances and furniture to out local Lions club, which run a Community Shop to provide furniture and goods to needy families. They even come to the house to collect it!

Around here scrap metal people seem very keen to get their hands on stuff. We left a cooker in teh front garden(yes, I know, I know), adn before we had a chance to phone them it disapeared.

EldonAve · 22/01/2009 12:25

www.emmaus.org.uk may accept them
