the nursery school DS might possibly go to is just over 2 miles away. i don't drive but don't really want to fork out for the bus every day either.

I walk a mile and a half, then catch a bus to get ds to school. It's a PITA, especially when it's cold/wet/we are running late.

OUrs was about 1.5 miles from our old house. It is quite a long way day in, day out. What about cycling?

harpomarx · 22/11/2008 22:47

Is DS still in a buggy? if so and it's an easy walk (not loads of hills) and he's in for a decent amount of time, I think it's doable.

otherwise I think it's a bit far. DD (4) walks just under a mile to school every day and that is fine, I wouldn't want to do twice as far as that though.

The school that DS used to go to was 1.6 miles away, I used to take him on the bus and walk home and then walk to pick him up and bring him home on the train. He just hates to walk so it would have taken hours if I hadn't taken him on public transport, plus he was exhausted at the end of the day. Before I withdrew him from the school I was considering walking up with him on the scooter, but I suspect it would still have been a little far for him.

It took me just under 30 mins to walk it, so would probably take 40 mins for 2 miles. You would be very fit if you did it.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/11/2008 22:52

How about a tag along bike?

nappyaddict · 22/11/2008 22:53

it's 2.25 miles and i reckon it would take about 45 mins. Yes DS still in buggy. His playgroup at the moment is 1.25 miles away and he always walks back but i let him go in the pushchair there so he's not too tired for playgroup.

It would be quite a big chunk out of your day (45 mins x 4 trips is 3 hours) unless you can fit other parts of your routine around it. For instance can you go to the supermarket on the way?

hotCheeseBurns · 08/12/2008 18:51

I walk 2.1 miles to work, dropping off ds at nursery on the way. He's almost three and in the pushchair and it's fine and easy.

needmorecoffee · 08/12/2008 18:55

some days. and dd is in a wheelchair which is heavy. Other days she is picked up by taxi (paid for by LA) but I try and do 2-3 days walking for eco-reasons.
So leave at 8.15, back by 9.40. Then leave at 12.15, back at 1.45.
Not looking any slimmer though

Can you cycle with a child seat? I would do that, for a 2 mile trip, walking would just take too long, especially if you generally have to come home in between.

shitehawk · 08/12/2008 18:57

Depends on the child really, but dd's nursery (and her school; they are in the same road) is almost two miles away, and she has never had any trouble walking it.

hotCheeseBurns · 08/12/2008 18:58

I'm hoping to get my bike sorted out and start cycling, but only because it's mostly footpaths, I wouldn't want to cycle on the road! Especially with ds on the back. I would cause so many accidents...

ComeOVeneer · 08/12/2008 18:59

When we lived in Chicago and had no car I used to walk 3km to nursery with ds in buggy, dd on buggy board, then home again with ds in the morning, then return to collect and home at 3.30pm 3 days a week.

cazzybabs · 08/12/2008 19:01

we cycle...me, dd1 on a bike and dds 2 and 3 on bike seats

twentypence · 08/12/2008 19:03

10 miles a day on a bike wouldn't take long - but I wouldn't want to walk that far every day with the potential for wanting a wee along the way.

How much is a weekly bus pass?

Takver · 08/12/2008 19:41

We also do bike (just under 2 miles), started with child seat while dd in nursery, graduated to tagalong at age 4.5, now age 6.5 a mix of tagalong and her own bike depending on weather & time.
I really enjoy the time together, but then it is a quiet road
