Can i put newspaper in my compost?

Yes you can. Screwing the pages up into balls works best according to DH. Apparently it is important that you put that sort of stuff in your compost bin.

I chuck in my paper shreddings when I put grass clippings in to try and avoid the mush.

Yes yes, you should. Put a layer in occasionally, especially when you've lots of wet stuff like grass cuttings. Full layer of scrunched up bits thouhg. Mix it up too when you can. Scrunched up balls of paper good for letting air in the heap, when you need more nitrogen...or should that be oxygen...can't remember but it's good!

Ooh that is timely advice I have some grass clippings to go on so will do that tomorrow.
