What car has the BEST fuel economy (and lowest emission rates) ?

Ok, I am not sure I should post in this topic, as some may argue that having a car is not exactly ethical living, but if you live in the sticks with hardly any public transport, you still need to get your kids to and from school.

I would like to chose a car on the basis of its fuel economy and low emission rates. It has to fit a family of four. Any suggestions?

get your petrol delivered to your door!
from here
I can't believe how cheap they are - I ordered thirty litres of super unleaded and it was there, next day, left on my doorstep in 2 litre plastic bottles.

my dh didquite a bit of research and concluded that citreon c3 was best for us. i think it was the most efficient for a 4 door car. the diesel version that is. we then found a second hand one at a dealer near us (3 yrs old). he looked at the emission ratings on (uk) government website - sorry don't know where he looked but you could prob google it.

Agree Citroen C3 is ggod with fuel, especially the diesel one (although we have to sell our firstborn every time we need to fill up these days)

If you buy a car that's in the lowest tax bracket (£35.00 a year), I am sure it means the car is low emissions.

V W have released a new range that has very low co2 output and low petrol consumption - it's called the bluemotion range and I think each model has a bluemotion equivalent.

I think a lot depends on how you drive - not exactly the car.

rebelmum1 · 16/06/2008 11:51

We've just switched to bio diesel and we get 30% more mileage and it costs 30% less at the pump. We are going to do it ourselves and save 300 a month. I'd recommend an oldish diesel car!

How you drive is as important as what you drive, can increase fuel efficiency (and engine lifetime) by something like 25% over the average. There are lots of tips out there about eco-friendly driving. Don't use the air conditioning, don't accelerate fast, do minimal braking, keep to speed limit & just below, etc.
