Is anyone in a Car Club? Are they as good as they sound?

I have a friend in a car club and they have been pleased with it. From what I understand, they have only used the car a couple of times though.
They made a very valid point that it still puts a car on the road despite it being a shared car and that they want to still try and use public transport and their bike as much as possible. They have just had a baby though, so they may get more use from it now.

Thanks. It's really for things like shopping or going to stay with my parents (not near public transport).

Is anyone else in one?

We use streetcar. £6/hr, plenty of cars near us (North London) and easy to book. Very useful for short trips or longer days out. We also used it for a week away once, but in retrospect a standard hire car would probably work out cheaper for long journeys. You get 30 miles free petrol per day, then there's a per-mile charge (I forget how much - pence). To top up the tank you have a card to pay for petrol, and if you use it to pay for a carwash, you get money back (for your time I guess), which equates to a free hour's driving.
